Stop & Shop on Thursday became the latest Ahold Delhaize USA supermarket chain to allow customers using SNAP benefits the option to pay with an EBT card when placing online orders for pickup and delivery.
Earlier this year, Ahold chains The Giant Company, Giant Food, Hannaford and Food Lion also began accepting EBT payments online for SNAP recipients.

For Stop & Shop, the new service applies for all families and individuals paying with SNAP funds across the grocers five-state footprint including more than 400 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, as well as for customers receiving delivery in New Hampshire.
The new user-friendly experience offers online grocery shoppers the option to add their EBT card to their account on StopandShop.com and to shop using their SNAP funds. While browsing online aisles, SNAP customers can sort products to show eligible items, and a “SNAP Eligible” label will appear within the product details. At checkout, customers can select the “Apply SNAP benefits” option and select the amount to charge to their EBT card, allowing personalized budgeting throughout the month.

Additionally, customers that prefer to use the Instacart marketplace may now also use their SNAP benefits to purchase grocery items from Stop & Shop at instacart.com/StopandShop.

I personally have no problem with them requiring people to pay the delivery and other non food fees with cash or credit cards, but thing they should accept the food stamp benefits for food items like they would in their stores. Since they don’t, it limits people on food stamps who are less able to get to the grocery store or carry groceries, and many end up going to convenience stores more often, so the food dollars don’t go as far. I think this is a reasonable accommodation to people who need it.

ShopRite, a northeastern grocery chain with roughly 300 stores, accepts EBT payment for online grocery orders from stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
The Fresh Grocer, which operates about a dozen stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, also lets customers shop online using EBT as payment.
ShopRite and The Fresh Grocer are both subsidiaries of the grocery cooperative Wakefern Food Corp.
