What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a U.S. Department of Agriculture initiative administered by Tennessee Department of Human Services that provides nutritional assistance to qualifying households. South Carolina SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps, provides financial aid to low-income families so that they can meet their food requirements. The program assists eligible households so that they can buy nutrition food that will help in growth and healthy development of children.

This is a local South Carolina DSS Office. You can apply at this office or go online to: SCMAPP.sc.gov. SCMAPP is an online application for South Carolinians to apply for many health and human service programs. Households, individuals, seniors and the homeless may all be eligible for SNAP bene?ts. People who are working and need help to stretch their income to purchase food may also be eligible for SNAP bene?ts as well as those receiving Social Security bene?ts, child support or unemployment. DSS administers the SNAP program through DSS county of?ces. Eligibility caseworkers interview applicants and approve those who qualify to receive the food bene?t. Quali?ed applicants for the SNAP program begin receiving SNAP bene?ts within 30 days of their application. Some families and individuals need expedited bene?ts, which begin within seven days of application. Once household eligibility is determined, your approved food stamp benefits will be deposited into an account each month. The account is accessed by using an Electronic Benefits Transfer card. The EBT card acts as a debit card. Each time you use your card, your account will be reduced by the cost of the groceries you buy.

How Do I Know If I Qualify For Emergency Snap Benefits
You may qualify for expedited SNAP benefits if your households gross monthly income is less than $150 and liquid resources do not exceed $100 OR your households monthly gross income plus any cash that you have on hand or in the bank is less than your rent/mortgage and utilities OR your SNAP household contains a migrant or seasonal farm worker who is considered destitute and the households liquid resources do not exceed $100.

What Cannot Be Purchased With Snap Benefits
