Curbside Pickup For Snap/ebt Shoppers Begins Tuesday At Kroger
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Indiana shoppers who receive government assistance for the purchase of food and other products can use direct-to-the-car delivery at Kroger beginning Tuesday.
The company announced last week that it will accept SNAP/EBT payment for its pickup service across the Hoosier State. It had already begun the practice in Ohio.
Kroger is rolling out a payment capability across our nearly 2,800 grocery stores to allow more customers to access fresh, affordable food and essentials through our Pickup service, said Rodney McMullen, Krogers chairman and CEO.
To use curbside pickup, customers shop and place their grocery order at Kroger.com after selecting their preferred store location. For customers using benefits to pay for the groceries, “SNAP/EBT” should be selected as the payment option, then take the EBT card with you to the store when its time to pick up your order.
When a shopper arrives at the store, a Kroger employee will load the grocery order into the car. Kroger said the EBT payment is then completed with a mobile point-of-sale system and a debit or credit card can be used to pay for an ineligible items or to pay off the balance of the order.
In anticipation of more shoppers opting for curbside pickup, Kroger said they have hired more workers in their e-commerce department, added more times for which pickup is available and has waived the usual $4.95 fee to use the service.

According to Costcos customer service website, Costco warehouses accept VISA cards, debit and ATM cards, cash, checks, Costco Cash cards, and EBT cards.
Unlike shopping for groceries at Costco, which requires a Costco membership, non-members can eat at the Costco food court without paying any additional cost.

Walmarts biggest rival Amazon is also interested in getting a piece of the food stamp pie. The Everything Store was on a list of companies that signed for the United States Department of Agriculture test of SNAP payment for online grocery orders, CNBC reported.
There is no evidence that Amazon is participating in SNAP but it just purchased Whole Foods Market, which operates around 400 standalone grocery stores in the USA. Since Amazon is cutting prices at Whole Paycheck, adding SNAP benefits would be a logical progression. New stories indicate that Amazon plans to add pickup and returns for online merchandise at some of its stores.
Amazon is also accepting returns via Kohls a department store that targets working-class customers, CNBC reported. Since food stamps are now a regular feature of working-class life in the United States Amazon will need to tap them to attract such customers.
This will be a major threat to dollar store operators Dollar Tree and Dollar General which depend heavily on working-class customers. Also in Amazons crosshairs is the fast-growing discount grocery chain Aldi which is now a fixture in many lower-income neighborhoods in the Rust Belt.
How To Use Food Stamps For Online Grocery Shopping
The rules for using food stamps online vary by retailer. For example, when shopping on Amazon, youll add your SNAP EBT card, then shop for groceries, and when you check out, youll enter your EBT pin to pay for eligible purchases.
For Walmart pickup, youll order groceries online or through the Walmart grocery mobile app. During checkout, select EBT as your payment method. And when you arrive at your pickup location, the Walmart associate will use a portable card reader to swipe the EBT card.
Usually, you can also include non-SNAP items in the same order, but youll need to pay for them separately with a debit or credit card.

The Kroger Co. has begun accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for its online grocery pickup service.
Kroger said late Thursday that SNAP beneficiaries now can shop online for groceries at Kroger.com or via the Kroger mobile app and collect their order curbside at a nearby Kroger store. Pickup service is available at more than 2,000 Kroger Co. stores nationwide.

Kroger noted that pickup offers a low-contact, convenient service to customers concerned about shopping in stores due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Cincinnati-based retailer said it has waived the minimum purchase requirement and fee for all pickup orders to encourage use of the service.
