While North Carolina operates under a state of emergency during the coronavirus crisis, swaths of business closings and economic slowdown have newly unemployed and furloughed workers seeking public assistance to stock their pantries at home.

Additional federal funding is becoming available for those who already receive federal Food and Nutrition Services benefits, and for families whose children receive free and reduced-cost meals at school.

But loss of income related to the coronavirus pandemic has many Moore County residents applying for food stamps who didnt receive them before.

Since mid-March, the number of food stamp applications coming through the countys department of social services each week has doubled.

As soon as we heard about the stay at home order and the closing of businesses, we knew what that would mean for us, said Tammy Schrenker, Moore County’s DSS director. We knew that our applications would increase, so we moved around some of our staff to assign to processing them.

In a typical week, the department fields about 60 new applications from families and individuals seeking federal Food and Nutrition Services benefits. That number started climbing last month and is now around 130 per week.

Those who have lost some or all of their income and think they may qualify for food benefits can also apply online at epass.nc.gov. Schrenker said that new online applications begin processing each morning, and staff check the dropbox on an hourly basis.
