How to Apply

Submit your application to your local DFS office in person, by mail, or fax.

After receiving your application, a DFS employee will contact you to schedule a phone or face-to-face interview with a benefit specialist.

How to Qualify

Qualifying for SNAP: Each application is reviewed pursuant to federal regulations and no two households are alike. There may be other regulations than what is listed below that apply which may impact your eligibility. Check the SNAP Income Limits.

Resources: Individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income or households who receive POWER/Tribal TANF are exempt from the resource limit. If your household includes a member who is age 60 or older or includes a member who is disabled has a resource limit of $3,750. All other households may have up to $2,500 in resources.

Resources are things like:

  • Income producing property.
  • Stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.

Benefit Amounts: The amount of SNAP a household receives depends on the number of people in your household and the total amount of net income .

How Long Will I Get Help

You can get SNAP benefits for as long as you are eligible for help. You will be required to complete a mid-certification and a recertification each year you get SNAP to make sure your household is still eligible. If you do not return your information by the deadline on the form, you may lose your benefits.

  • Your mid-certification will happen halfway through your benefit period. You will get a form in the mail that you will need to complete and return to the Family Support Division.
  • Around the end of your SNAP benefit period, you will get a recertification form in the mail. You will need to complete this form, return it to the Family Support Division, and complete an interview to continue getting SNAP benefits.

NOTE: It is important that you report any changes to your contact information, including your address, so you will get these important letters in the mail. If you do not respond to mail from the FSD, you could lose your benefit.

You May Be Eligible If:

If your household includes someone 60+ or with a disability:

You may still qualify if your income is over limit, but we’ll consider the resources you own with some exceptions . Definition of disability.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a U.S. Department of Agriculture initiative administered by Tennessee Department of Human Services that provides nutritional assistance to qualifying households. SNAP benefits are issued and accessed electronically using a Electronic Benefit Card or EBT Card for more information .

SNAP recipients receive benefits for a determined amount of time called a certification period. Our hope is that by the end of your certification period, you will reach a point where you are self-sufficient, thriving and able to care for your household without outside support. How to Contact the Family Support Division

It depends. Every SNAP household got at least $95 in P-SNAP benefits. If your household did not get the maximum SNAP benefit for your household size, your P-SNAP benefit should have been the amount it takes to get you to the maximum benefit. For example:

    • If you are a family of 4 with a normal SNAP benefit of $600 each month, your P-SNAP benefit was $182 to make your total SNAP benefit the maximum monthly amount .
    • If you are a family of 4 who normally gets the maximum monthly SNAP benefit of $782, your P-SNAP benefit was $95 to make your total SNAP benefit $877.
    • If you are a family of 4 with a normal SNAP benefit of $750 each month, your P-SNAP benefit was $95 to make your total SNAP benefit $845.
