In response to COVID-19 related closures, the Pandemic Electronics Benefits Transfer and CalFresh programs have assisted hundreds of thousands of low-income families with food assistance benefits cards.

The California Department of Social Services, in partnership with the California Department of Education, began distributing P-EBT last summer to provide students and their families with additional food assistance services.

For many low-income students, school breakfasts and lunches fill a critical nutritional need.

According to the U.S Department of Agriculture , the P-EBT program connects eligible school aged children with food benefits equivalent to the value of meals missed due to COVID-related school and childcare closures.

Established under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act in March, the USDA recently announced a 15 percent increase in the amount of daily benefit amounts to continue supporting low-income households last month.

Additionally, participants in the CalFresh food assistance program will also receive food benefit increases, according to a KRON 4 article published last week.

Food Assistance Program Supports Low Income And Those Temporarily Impacted

Every month, families are dealing with the food insecurities that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought. Each month, many families are already benefiting from the support that CalFresh Food provides.

After all, every new month brings a new allotment of food assistance benefits when you’re a CalFresh Food recipient.

CalFresh Food, Californias name for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program , supports low-income families, individuals and even those temporarily impacted with monthly food benefits that can be used to purchase food.

CalFresh is a supplemental program that helps put food on the table, said Ana Guitron, 29, an eligibility worker from San José helping residents apply for food assistance benefits with CalFresh Food.

During these times many are not working. Programs like CalFresh help ensure families in need dont get left behind.

Though the winter months are weeks ahead, it is important to speak with a county eligibility worker to see if you qualify for CalFresh Food benefits, especially for residents who may already be eligible.

Families who have students that qualify for free and reduced lunch are already eligible to receive CalFresh food benefits. And with online resources like the See if Im Eligible tool, determining eligibility has never been easier.

And it all begins with a simple applying process.

Piloting a scalable model for making healthy food more affordable

As we highlighted in the SPUR report Healthy Food Within Reach, one of the biggest obstacles to healthy eating is the affordability of healthy food. The Santa Clara County Healthy Food Incentive Grocery Project — also known as Double Up Food Bucks California — helps families overcome that barrier. This pilot project provides matching funds so that families and individuals participating in the CalFresh program can buy even more fresh fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. For example, a shopper who spends $10 of CalFresh benefits on California-grown fruits and vegetables at participating stores will get an extra $10 to spend on any fresh produce in the store.

In the long term, a permanently funded healthy food incentive program that is integrated into the CalFresh program at farmers markets and grocery stores statewide will help make produce more affordable for low-income families and increase the economic viability of local agricultural economies. Our Double Up Food Bucks pilot is the next step in our campaign to reach these long-term goals.

Seven grocery stores in Santa Clara County and Alameda County are participating in Double Up Food Bucks. For more details about participating store locations and how the program works, please see: www.DoubleUpCA.org
