Those Who Receive Snap Benefits Will See A 21% Increase Beginning In October

More than 42-million Americans are about to get a significant boost when it comes to putting food on the table — a boost that will impact more than 700,000 families in Michigan.

Beginning October 1, 2021, the program once known as Food Stamps will be receiving the single largest increase in the program’s 46-year history.

Nearly nine out of 10 people on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are reportedly facing barriers to achieving a healthy diet. The main hurdle, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is the cost of buying healthier foods.

One in eight Americans receives food assistance, but the amount was based on decades-old data. That’s about to change.

According to the USDA, beginning Oct. 1, the average person receiving monthly SNAP benefits will get an increase of $36.24, which is about a 21% increase. It will go from $121 a month to $157 per month.

Kristin Seefeldt, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work said the change is long overdue. She has followed the struggles of many families facing food insecurity in metro Detroit.

Weve all heard about and probably felt in our own pocketbooks the increase in grocery prices,” she said. “So, this will make a huge impact on families with lower incomes who are really feeling the brunt of this pandemic-induced inflation.

The USDA announced in mid-August that it had re-evaluated the “Thrifty Food Plan” which is used to calculate SNAP benefits.

Pandemic Food Stamp Increase Expires Will There Be More

Food insecurity has risen during the pandemic. According to the Brookings Institution, one in five moms say their kids arent getting enough food.

Brittany Christianson heads up the non-profit, ADK Action, here in the North Country. Her group works with people who receive food assistance.

Back in April, they got huge relief when Congress increased SNAP benefits in a big way.

Theres an elderly woman in Essex County who had been receiving $16 per month. 1-6 and due to the extension of SNAP benefits, she was getting closer to $200 a month, Christianson said.

When this older woman first got the money, she thought it was a scam. She called the food pantry shed been relying on to get their take. When they told her it was real, she was thrilled. Research shows increases to SNAP like this reduce food insecurity and boost local economies.

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in a video on her Facebook page said, Every SNAP dollar spent puts more than $1.80 back into the economy. When families can afford to purchase food, it allays pressure on food banks.

But these increased SNAP benefits expired in June and theyre always a political flashpoint in Washington.

Anti-hunger advocates and Democrats, including Gillibrand, are pushing for a 15-percent increase.

On the other hand, many Republicans have tried to shrink the program, saying it bolsters a welfare state.

That future relief package is expected sometime this month.

Calfresh Emergency Allotment Payment Schedule For 2020 And 2021

How to Apply for Food Stamps

Heres how to read the Emergency Allotment Payment Schedule Below:

As mentioned above, each eligible household will only receive one emergency allotmentper benefit month that emergency allotments are approved.

However, California runs three issuances for each approved emergency allotment for a given month.

Therefore, if you did not get the benefit on the first issuance date for a particular month, it means it may be sent on the second issuance date.

Furthermore, if you did not get the benefit for a particular month on the first or second issuance date, it means you will receive that benefit on the third issuance date for that month.

It is therefore possible that your extra benefit for a particular month may be issued the following month, two months after, or three months after.

The Biden Administration Increases P

As of January 22, 2021, the Biden Administration passed a law to increase Pandemic EBT benefits by 15% to help fight childhood hunger.

Previously, the P-EBT program was capped at $5.86 per child per school day.

In addition, many households have had issues claiming their P-EBT benefits.

The 15% increase to the P-EBT Program will tackle the problem of food insecurity among children during the school year.

Requires Action From Congress

The USDA doesn’t have the authority to extend the 15% hike in nutritional aid beyond September, an agency spokesperson said, adding that this would require action from Congress. The agency said it is reexamining the Thrifty Food Plan, but hasn’t specified when it will release its findings.

The Thrifty Food Plan, which determines the food stamp benefits provided to families, stems from research in the 1960s to create a budget for a “nutritionally adequate diet for short-term or emergency use,” according to a USDA publication.

Since it was created, the Thrifty Food Plan has been adjusted for inflation, but not for other factors, such as new research into nutrition, variations in local food costs, or specialized diets for people with specific health issues, according to food experts. Under the plan, an adult man should be able to feed himself with $45.60 per week on a diet that includes almost two pounds of beans and about half a pound of beef per week.

The Thrifty Food Plan also assumes people have more than two hours a day to spend on food preparation. Real households on SNAP benefits spend an average of less than one hour a day preparing meals, according to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank.

“Every time I talk with a mom, they talk about the price of milk,” she said. “A lot of people think meat when they think protein. It makes people feel they can’t put the core things on the table.”
