Grocery Delivery As An Option To Ebt Meal Delivery
Some meal delivery services offer a great value to individuals and families that want fresh, nutritious meals but are short on time or lack easy access to a well-stocked grocery store. Currently, the main meal delivery services only accept standard payment options, including credit cards, Apple Pay, and gift cards. Hello Fresh also accepts PayPal for those that dont use credit cards.
As an alternative, you can choose to order groceries online, pay for them with your EBT, and have them delivered directly to your door. Fresh Direct is one company that offers this option to their customers. With Fresh Direct, you can choose SNAP-eligible food items on their website, including frozen prepared meals that can be easily reheated.
The only downside to Fresh Direct is its limited delivery area. Currently, they only serve certain areas of the northwest, including select cities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Washington DC.

The food stamp allotments made to each household are not counted as taxable income. Neither the IRS nor state or local taxing authorities may tax food stamp benefits, according to federal law. Food stamps are a matter of public debate after the Trump administration unveiled its plan to turn the antipoverty program into a “Blue Apron-type program.” But critics say the food-box plan is a distraction from a bigger threat facing the program: the administration’s proposal to slash its spending by 30 percent.
President Donald Trump’s budget proposes cutting $213 billion over a decade from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , a move that the progressively minded Center on Budget and Policy Priorities calls “ill-advised and harmful.”
Much of the current debate is focused on Mr. Trump’s “Blue Apron” idea, which critics pointed out wouldn’t be anything like the subscription gourmet meal service. For one, the boxes would rely on canned foods and long-life milk instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, a far cry from the fresh food delivered by Blue Apron. And recipients of Mr. Trump’s “America’s Harvest Box” wouldn’t get to pick what they wanted to eat, unlike Blue Apron customers.
However, critics say the hullabaloo is overshadowing the bigger problems facing SNAP, including the Trump proposal to slash funding and cut eligibility, which would bump millions of low-income senior citizens, disabled Americans and working families off the program. Four million families would lose their food stamps from the eligibility requirements alone, the CBPP estimates.

What Can’t You Buy
You cannot use EBT benefits to pay for household items. For example, you cannot buy toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste or deodorant with SNAP benefits. You cannot purchase pet food, pet treats or other pet products. You will not be able to use your benefits to buy alcohol or cigarettes. You also cannot use your benefits to buy food prepared in the store. For example, you cannot purchase items such as cooked fish, rotisserie chicken or prepared side dishes.

That’s basically it, but to lard out the piece into several paragraphs, Matthew Boyle does that thing where you take concepts that are easy to grasp and pretend that they are shocking surprises. For instance: the food at Whole Foods is rather expensive! Also, you can buy food with food stamps that is not necessarily very good for you. And special pains have been taken to point out the surprising news that you cannot actually use food stamps to buy things that are inedible:
Ironically, my food stamps didn’t cover the five-cent D.C. tax on grocery bags, so I paid that in cash. It was the only money I spent that didn’t come from the government.
You wouldn’t think it news to find out that you cannot purchase plastic bags with foodstamps, seeing as how humans cannot actually digest them. You would think that someone who’s thunderstruck by this news is someone for whom the basic matters of modern life is a crippling bafflement. To mitigate against this, Boyle goes to great lengths to point out that he can take virtually anything in the average CVS and turn it into something alcoholic, or put it to use as a garnishment to getting fracked up.
