Maximum Monthly Amounts On Food Stamps

There is a maximum monthly allotment based on the size of the household. When determining your benefit allotment, they will take your net monthly income and multiply it by 30%. That number will then be subtracted from the maximum monthly allotment. The remaining amount is the total monthly allotment you will receive based on your application. This amount may change if your income or household size changes.

SNAP benefits are a specific money amount provided to recipients each month to go towards nutritional foods. Recipients are provided with an electronic benefits transfer card, and money is added to the card each month. You can check your balance by phone, and any unused funds at the end of the month remain on the card to be used to following month. Once allocated, benefits will not expire.

Benefits can be used to buy food and drinks at most grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, pharmacies that sell food, and farmers markets. Benefits cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, medicine, hot food, food meant to be eaten in the store, or any non-food items.

How Do I Start Using My Lone Star Card

Before you can use your card, you must:

Activate your card.Call 800-777-7328 to activate your card.

Pick or change your PIN.

You need 4 numbers for your PIN.

Pick numbers that are easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess.

If you already have a Lone Star Card PIN, you can keep it or change it.

*Important: Don’t write your PIN on your Lone Star Card.Don’t keep your PIN with your Lone Star Card.Sign the back of your card.

You can’t use your card until you sign it.

What Household Changes Do I Need To Report To Keep My Texas Ebt Benefits

In order to keep receiving your Texas SNAP EBT benefits, you have to report to the HHSC any changes that may affect the level of benefits you are eligible for.

You should report the following changes in your household situation to the HHSC:

If anyone moves in or out of your SNAP household. Your SNAP household refers to anyone included on your Texas SNAP case.

Financial changes like income, rent, savings, or child support.
Changes to your address to ensure you receive important letters from HHSC. If your mail is returned to HHSC, this could cause your SNAP case to be denied or benefits canceled.

How To Use Your Lone Star Ebt Card

When you buy food using your SNAP benefits or use cash aid for buying approved TANF items, you can use your Texas Lone Star EBT card. To use your card, you just need to swipe it and provide the secret PIN. The payment will be automatically subtracted to your card and you will receive a receipt with updated balance.

To start using your card, follow these quick steps.

When you receive your card, put your signature on the back of card.
Once signed, you will need to register your card to start using it for payments. You can register by calling at 1 800 777 7328. However, cards picked up at HHSC office are already registered but you will still need to call 1 800 777 7328 in order to setup a secret PIN to secure the card.
After your card is registered and you have setup a PIN code, you can swipe it at Point-of-Sale machine. When you use your card, the EBT system automatically checks your balance, pays the outstanding amount, and updates the card at the same time.
