    Faqs On Flavored Water

How long can flavored water be stored in the refrigerator?

Homemade Infused Waters will last up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Just keep in mind you may want to remove the fruits and herbs after 24 hours so they do not break down and leave the water bitter.

    Can these recipes be doubled?

YES! You can double, triple, or quadruple the recipes as desired.

Can you use frozen fruit to make infused water?

I don’t recommend using frozen fruit, as it will not release as much flavor and can break down easily in the water.

Can you use make a second batch of infused waters with the same fruit?

Yes, but the water will not be as potent or flavorful. It is best, to add water to the container once you reach the halfway point so that the flavorful water mixes and imparts some flavor to the new water. You can repeat this process for up to 3 days. Fruits with strong flavors, such as lemon, pineapple, and orange, are best for multiple infusions. Fleshy fruits, berries, and melons are not well-suited to multiple infusions, as they break down quickly.

New Rules Will Penalize Food Stamp Recipients For Water Dumping

Food stamp recipients who trade or sell their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for money or use them to purchase beverages just so they can dump the liquid and return the empties for cash now risk losing their benefits.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has taken a hard stand on water dumping and the selling or trading of benefits and announced Wednesday that it has updated the definition of trafficking a disqualifying action to include both as stealing of benefits.

I recall several years ago Bangor police responding to a downtown store where a person bought a whole case and just stepped outside the door and dumped all the water out for the purpose of getting that 5 cents, USDA Undersecretary Kevin Concannon said Wednesday during a phone interview. To me, that was such a flagrant violation of the program.

The young couple was caught on video dumping the water in front of Shaws grocery store and told police that they didnt think there was anything wrong with what they were doing. The bottled water they bought with their SNAP card cost around $6 and the duo got $2.40 back in cash from the redeemed bottles.

The woman who took the video on her cellphone called the Bangor Daily News and said she was outraged that people on welfare were dumping public money down the drain.

The names of those removed from the program will be put on a nationwide banned list, he said.

Its a very serious violation, Concannon said.

What Kinds Of Products Cannot Be Purchased With Snap Benefits

There are approved and unapproved products for SNAP. As the name would suggest, the benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are intended to be spent on food. Most foods and beverages are on the approved list. Benefits can be used to purchase bread, cereals, fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy products and more.

You cannot use your benefits to pay for any type of alcohol, so you cannot use your SNAP benefits to buy beer, wine, or malt beverages at grocery stores, gas stations, or anywhere else that accepts the EBT card. You cannot use the EBT card in liquor stores, wineries, or other places that specialize in alcohol sales.

Benefits cannot be used to buy any sort of tobacco products either. This includes cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, loose tobacco, e-cigs, e-cig refills, or anything else involving tobacco or tobacco products. This is true even if you are shopping at a store or gas station that accepts the EBT card.

Benefits also cannot be used to pay for vitamins or over-the-counter medicines. Depending on your eligibility, you may be able to get vitamins and over-the-counter medicines covered through other aid programs. Many states include certain vitamins and medicines under their Medicaid coverage plans.

If you try to buy something that is not approved, your purchase will be declined. However, many EBT-approved places understand the rules regarding benefits and will advise you if you are trying to buy items that will be denied.

Surprising Things You Can Buy With Food Stamps

    Follow

Reductions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , otherwise known as food stamps, automatically kick in today as a result of the expiration of provisions the 2009 stimulus bill. Meanwhile, Congressional leaders are debating what further cuts will be made to the program as part of negotiations over the farm bill. Republicans are pushing to make benefits less generous and to increase work requirements Democrats disagree.

An issue that hasnt gotten as much attention during these debates is what food-stamp recipients are able to buy with their benefits. Public health advocates like Michele Simon have long argued that the lack of restrictions on the types of food aid-recipients can buy has helped fuel an American health crisis caused by unhealthy eating. Writes Simon:

Much attention has focused on how agricultural subsidies fuel our cheap, unhealthy food supply. In reality, the largest and most overlooked taxpayer subsidy to Big Food in the farm bill is SNAP, which now represents more than ten percent of all grocery spending.

So what exactly can SNAP recipients buy with their benefits? There are a few restrictions, against alcohol, and tobacco for instance. But curiously, most junk food is fair game, calling into question whether the nutrition in SNAP means much to lawmakers at all. Here are just a few of the items one can buy:

    • Red Bull
    • Mixes for alcoholic beverages
    • Artificial sweetener
