Most Hoosiers Should See Slight Increase In Food Stamps In October

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, at the direction of Congress, recently updated its Thrifty Food Plan as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , also known as food stamps.

Hoosiers should expect a change in their food stamp benefits as October begins with most getting an increase.
There are two adjustments to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The first is the end of a temporary, pandemic-driven 15 percent benefit increase. It was part of the Biden administrations American Rescue Plan and doesnt go beyond Sept. 30.
But another change, taking effect Oct. 1, should more than offset that decrease. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, at the direction of Congress, recently updated its Thrifty Food Plan. The USDA describes that as the cost of groceries needed to provide a healthy, budget-conscious diet for a family of four.

According to the agency, that update means SNAPs purchasing power will increase for the first time since 1975. And it estimates that most SNAP recipients will see a $12 to $16 per person boost in their monthly benefits.
The state says because both those changes are happening at the same time, most Hoosiers should see a slight increase in their SNAP benefits in October.

Hoosier Healthwise is the State of Indianas health care program for children, pregnant women, and families with low income.
Based on family income, children up to age 19 may be eligible for coverage. HHW covers medical care like doctor visits, prescription medicine, mental health care, dental care, hospitalizations, surgeries, and family planning at little or no cost to the member or the members family.

Do I Qualify For Snap
To qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, applicants must meet certain non-financial and financial requirements. Non-financial requirements include state residency, citizenship/alien status, work registration and cooperation with the IMPACT program. Financial criteria include income and asset limits.
The asset/resource limits are $5,000 for most households. Assets include bank accounts, cash, real estate, personal property, vehicles, etc. The household’s home and surrounding lot, household goods and personal belongings and life insurance policies are not counted as assets in the SNAP program.
