Washington Food Stamps Requirements
Applicants must meet the Washington food stamps requirements before they can collect Basic Food benefits in the state. Examples of these prerequisites include:
- Citizenship or qualifying immigration status: Petitioners need to be U.S. citizens or legal residents to receive SNAP.
- Washington residency: The requirements for food stamps indicate that applicants need to live in the state to collect benefits through the program.
- Monthly income: Claimants need to earn monthly gross and net income amounts that are within the states predetermined income threshold.
- Household assets: Applicants may not possess household assets that total less than $2,250. For households with at least one family member who is disabled or elderly, this limit rises to $3,500.
- Work requirements: Food stamps eligibility rules state that claimants who are physically able to work must be employed. Alternatively, applicants who are not working must be enrolled in approved training programs and actively searching for work.

Some States Are Ending Their Covid
The pandemic made it easier to getand keepfood assistance. In some places, those expanded benefits are drawing to a close.
On Tuesday, legislators in Kansas allowed the states Covid-19 disaster emergency declaration to expire. In doing so, Kansas joined a growing number of states halting pandemic-related aid programs before the federal cutoff date.
A handful of other states have allowed their emergency declarations to expire, too. Because the emergency allotments are contingent upon emergency declarations at both state and federal levels, the end of a state-level declaration generally means the end of added benefits. South Carolina will stop issuing emergency SNAP allotments on August 1, for example, while a representative from Idaho said that state had already discontinued the payments. In other states, like Wisconsin, where Democratic governors in favor of disaster declarations have clashed with courts and lost, officials have been able to sidestep court rulings ending the disaster by negotiating directly with USDA to extend benefits. Already, 25 Republican-controlled states have opted to end the $300 weekly expanded unemployment benefits prior to the federal cutoff date SNAP emergency allotments could follow a similar trajectory as unemployment levels fall and vaccinations rise.

How Is This Different Than Last School Year
The school year 2019-20 P-EBT program originally provided food benefits to eligible school aged children for the months of March, April, May and June 2020. Households applied for these benefits and if determined eligible, they received a standard benefit amount issued by lump sum on a EBT card.
Washington State has received federal approval to issue P-EBT benefits for children in school for school year 2020-21 from September 2020 to June 2021. We automated the eligibility process to get more households the assistance they need during the COVID-19 public health emergency. This means households do not have to apply for the 2020-21 P-EBT program.

Biden Expands Food Assistance But Families Still Go Hungry
Lost amid the torrent of news in recent weeks, President Joe Biden announced the largest increase in food stamps in the programs history.
This will help more than 914,000 Washington state residents who receive monthly food assistance. But the total new dollars per meal are staggeringly modest.
Under the new plan, participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will have a daily benefit of $5.25, up from about $4. That amounts to less than $2 for each meal, according to Northwest Harvest, a statewide hunger relief and food-justice agency.
Its welcome change. But the fact is, it really isnt adequate to afford basic nutrition, said Christina Wong, Northwest Harvests public policy and advocacy director.
People will still go hungry. Congress should keep that in mind as members now turn their attention to Bidens proposed reworking of the nations social safety net.
A permanent expansion to the Child Tax Credit, part of Bidens proposed $3.5 trillion social policy plan, would cut child poverty in half, and increase food security. Wong also says additional increases to food stamps set in place as part of the pandemic response should be made permanent.
Hunger is found in every corner of the state, belying rising property values and other indicators of economic growth.
Under the new rules, the average monthly benefit of $121 a person before the pandemic will rise by $36.
State Supplements And Food Stamp Receipt
Because the FSP benefit is nationally uniform , it would be reasonable to expect that the prevalence of food stamp receipt would be lower in states with a substantial SSI supplement than in states without. However, separate calculation of FSP prevalence in states grouped by size of supplement revealed no clear pattern. For the elderly, living in a high supplement state is associated with higher, not lower, prevalence of food stamp receipt. For children, the opposite is true. It may be that the effect of high benefits is offset by high living costs. On average, housing coststhe key component of interstate variation in costs of livingare positively correlated with the presence and amount of the SSI state supplement.5
