How Can I Apply For Food Stamps

To apply for food stamp benefits, or for information about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , contact your local SNAP office. You can find local offices and each State’s application on the USDA national map. Local offices are also listed in the State or local government pages of the telephone book. The office should be listed under “Food Stamps,” “Social Services,” “Human Services,” “Public Assistance,” or a similar title. You can also call your State’s SNAP hotline numbers. Most are toll-free numbers.

Each State has its own application form. If your States form is not on the web yet, you’ll need to contact your local SNAP office to request one. Please don’t call USDA or HHS headquarters as only your State accepts applications and determines eligibility.

Non-Public Assistance SNAP , formerly called Food Stamps, helps low-income households by supplementing their monthly food budget. Eligible households use an electronic benefit card and PIN to access their benefits at the supermarket checkout counter the same way a debit card is used. There are many supermarkets throughout the county where recipients can use their benefit card.

Income GuidelinesThis USDA Pre-Screening Tool can be used to determine if you may be eligible to receive SNAP benefits. Households containing an individual age 60 or over, or one who is permanently disabled, do not have to meet the gross monthly income test.

Expedited SNAP BenefitsIf your household has little or no money and requires help right away, you may be able to receive expedited benefits to meet your food needs under SNAP. You must submit an application and be interviewed first in order to determine eligibility. If you qualify, you will receive your initial benefit within five days of application. You will still have to complete the eligibility process and supply all necessary and requested documentation within 30 days for continued eligibility.

Screening For Eligibility & Applying

• Option 2: Bypass eligibility screening and submit an application manually. Fill out an “Application for Benefits” from the forms section on this page and return it to your local department of social services.

Please note the following:

• The USDA has temporarily expanded SNAPeligibility for students enrolled at least part-time in a higher education institution.
• A manual application cannot be processed and is not considered complete until it is signed and received by your local department.
• An interview will be required unless you meet the conditions for a waiver.Proof of identity , residence, income, resource and shelter expenses will be required.
• Applications for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or General Relief, are considered an application for SNAP, unless you request otherwise.

Brief Description of Services:If necessary, the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services sometimes can pay for indigent burials or cremations when County residents do not have adequate resources to fully cover the final expenses of loved ones. When funeral arrangements are being made and family members express that someone has died without sufficient resources for a burial or cremation and they cannot assume responsibility for paying all the expenses, they can apply to Department of Social Services for assistance. The Indigent Burial Application forms are available at all funeral homes in the County, and must be completed listing all income and resources of legally responsible relatives as well as of the deceased. Applications are reviewed by the Resource Agent and eligibility is determined.

Eligibility: less than $1,500.00 in available resources

Application Process: St. Lawrence County has a contract with the Funeral Directors Association. All applications are submitted by the Funeral Home on the applicants behalf.

How Long Will I Get Help

You can get SNAP benefits for as long as you are eligible for help. You will be required to complete a mid-certification and a recertification each year you get SNAP to make sure your household is still eligible. If you do not return your information by the deadline on the form, you may lose your benefits.

• Your mid-certification will happen halfway through your benefit period. You will get a form in the mail that you will need to complete and return to the Family Support Division.
• Around the end of your SNAP benefit period, you will get a recertification form in the mail. You will need to complete this form, return it to the Family Support Division, and complete an interview to continue getting SNAP benefits.

NOTE: It is important that you report any changes to your contact information, including your address, so you will get these important letters in the mail. If you do not respond to mail from the FSD, you could lose your benefit.

OK SNAP Works is Oklahomas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training Program.

Individuals who receive SNAP benefits, are looking for a job, and do not receive cash assistance may be eligible to participate in free job training. Brief Description of Services

SNAP benefits are issued with a goal to reduce hunger and malnutrition among low-income working people, senior citizens, the disabled and others. If eligible, SNAP benefits are provided through an Electronic Benefit Transfer card, similar to a bank debit card or credit card. The card will be machine-read along with your PIN number at any authorized retail food store.

Applications are accepted Monday-Friday during normal business hours. Applicants who have an emergency are interviewed the same day they apply. This enables applicants to access needed services sooner, and with less travel. Face to Face interviews are waived for households that mail-in an application, drop off or apply online at www.mybenefits.ny.gov. Income and resource guidelines for Temporary Assistance and SNAP are different.

Who Is It For

• People who dont have a lot of money as long as they meet program rules.
