Many of Utahs farmers markets accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and participate in the SNAP-incentive program called Double Up Food Bucks . The Double Up program enables customers to double their dollars up to $30. As more than 80,000 families in Utah utilize the SNAP program, enabling SNAP purchases at your market is a great way to increase access to healthy food, bring new customers to your vendors, and stimulate the local economy.

Below are resources on both programs so that you can get started in creating a SNAP and Double Up program at your market. Please note that your market must be set up to take SNAP before you can participate in the Double Up program. From The Asbury Park Press: Snap Cuts In New Jersey

uts in New Jersey food aid focus on heating assistance program

WASHINGTON Nearly 160,000 New Jersey families will lose an average $90 in federal food assistance each month under a new farm law, but the cuts wont take effect immediately, an administration official said.

The families will continue to receive some assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , formerly known as food stamps.

The cuts will be phased in over the coming year. In addition, new enrollees wont be eligible for a program that automatically increases SNAP benefits for people already receiving federal help with their heating bills.

Some people have the impression that within a week, thousands of households will lose their benefits, and that is not the case, said Kevin Concannon, undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They will be gradually affected in a 15-to-17-month period.

Until now, people who received as little as $1 a year in heating aid through the Low Income Heating Assistance Program have automatically qualified for enhanced food assistance through SNAP under a program called heat and eat.

But the long-delayed farm bill signed into law last week toughens the standards for receiving SNAP benefits through the heat-and-eat program. Now, families must receive at least $20 a year from LIHEAP to qualify for the SNAP benefits.

Fifteen would be a lot, Talleur said. Twenty-five is huge.

How Do I Apply For Snap

Only one member of the households needs to apply for the total household, but everyone living in the household needs to be included on the application along with their income. Most states provide an online application to start the process. See the States website section for a link to your states website. If your state does not provide an online application or you do not have access to a computer, you can go to your local state or county office to apply.

As part of the application process, you will need to go to your local state or county office for a face-to-face interview. If you are not able to go to the local office or apply online, you can designate an authorized representative. This is someone you give authority to represent you. You have to designate the person in writing to be official. This person can be a friend or relative.

The entire process generally involves filling out an application, going in for a face-to-face interview, and providing verifications for needed information such as income, residency, and expenses. If because of age or disability, an applicant is unable to go to the office and cannot appoint a representative, the interview may be waived at the discretion of the local office. However, if the interview is waived, the applicant will have to have a phone interview or consent to a home visit instead.
