MONTGOMERY Alabama families who qualify for Pandemic EBT can expect to see additional benefits loaded onto their EBT cards within the next week.

The Alabama Department of Human Resources in June issued P-EBT benefits to approximately 470,000 children who missed out on free or reduced-price school meals because of the pandemic. Those benefits covered meals missed from . Now, eligible children will receive benefits for January through May 2021.

The upcoming P-EBT benefits will be added electronically to EBT cards that eligible families already received in June and July. Recipients should keep their cards because additional benefits may be added in the future.

Children in pre-K and K-12 qualify for P-EBT if they lost access to meals from the National School Lunch Program during the 2020-21 school year because their schools closed or switched to virtual and hybrid learning models in response to the pandemic. Children who returned to in-person learning from January through May are not eligible for these benefits because they were present in school to receive their meals through the National School Lunch Program. Eligibility is based on data from the Alabama State Department of Education .

DHR oversees the distribution of P-EBT with assistance from ALSDE. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service administers the program at the federal level.

Income Limit For Food Stamps In Alabama

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the name of the food stamp program. The program helps low-income individuals and families purchase groceries to prepare at home. After approval, the Alabama Department of Human Resources issues an electronic benefits card, or EBT, to the recipient, who can then use the card like a debit card to make purchases at participating grocers. Because the purpose of the program is to assist those with lower incomes, recipients’ income cannot exceed the limit for the family size.

Maximum Monthly Amounts On Food Stamps

There is a maximum monthly allotment based on the size of the household. When determining your benefit allotment, they will take your net monthly income and multiply it by 30%. That number will then be subtracted from the maximum monthly allotment. The remaining amount is the total monthly allotment you will receive based on your application. This amount may change if your income or household size changes.

SNAP benefits are a specific money amount provided to recipients each month to go towards nutritional foods. Recipients are provided with an electronic benefits transfer card, and money is added to the card each month. You can check your balance by phone, and any unused funds at the end of the month remain on the card to be used to following month. Once allocated, benefits will not expire.

Benefits can be used to buy food and drinks at most grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, pharmacies that sell food, and farmers markets. Benefits cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, medicine, hot food, food meant to be eaten in the store, or any non-food items.

Alabama Food Stamp Benefits To Increase Again Because Of Covid

A second round of pandemic EBT funds will be disbursed to eligible families starting in late spring or early summer, the Alabama Department of Resources announced.

Families already participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program with children under six years old who are not in school and all families with children in grades pre-K -12 that lost access to free or reduced price meals from the National School Lunch Program while schools were closed or holding classes virtually are eligible.

Families will receive $6.82 per school day for each eligible child. Benefits for children attending schools will be calculated for August 2020 through May 2021 and for those who are under six and not attending school, it will be calculated for October 2020 through May 2021.

This program helped put food on the table for almost half a million Alabama children in 2020, at a time when many children faced a growing risk of hunger,” Alabama DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner said. “We are grateful to the USDA Food and Nutrition Service for providing us with additional resources to build upon last years overwhelming success. Together with our partners at USDA-FNS and the Department of Education, we remain committed to ensuring that no child goes hungry as a result of this pandemic.

Families will receive EBT cards in the mail and the benefits are available for 365 days from the issue date. Children can still access meals from their school district.

How schools provide school meals affects P-EBT eligibility. To qualify for P-EBT, a school-age child must attend a school participating in the National School Lunch Program . The child also must have been eligible for free NSLP meals during the 2020-21 school year. Some schools provide universal free NSLP lunch and breakfast under a special option called community eligibility. Every child who attended those schools is eligible for P-EBT, no matter what their family income is. But other Alabama schools pay for free school meals with a summer feeding option that differs from community eligibility. Unlike community eligibility, this option does not automatically qualify children for P-EBT.

Children who attend a school that provides free meals through an option other than community eligibility must get approved for free or reduced-price meals in an additional way to be eligible for P-EBT. This approval most often results from an approved school meal application or family participation in SNAP. This can be very confusing for parents, who rarely know which federal funding stream pays for their childrens school meals. Many parents didnt apply for free meals because their children were already receiving them or were going to school remotely.
