Years ago, the federal government implemented a program called SNAP, or The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP was designed to ensure that U.S. residents with low or no income could purchase the food they need to survive.
The way it works is by giving participants in the SNAP program an electronic benefit transfer debit card. This card, which is also called an EBT card, allows them to access funds that they can then use to shop for groceries.
Once customers have their EBT login information and have been provided with a card, they can use it to make online purchases from participating vendors. The only requirement for making a purchase is that the retailer accepts EBT and is a part of the Online Purchasing Pilot.
With the rise of grocery delivery applications such as Instacart, many online delivery services have begun accepting SNAP cards. Instacart is one of the first services that accept EBT as a form of payment for groceries.
Remember, while you can use EBT online to pay for your Instacart groceries, you wont be able to hand an Instacart shopper EBT cash. That means youll need to place your order online or through the app to ensure its success.
Wakefern Enables Snap Ebt Payment For Instacart Orders
Wakefern Food Corp. the nations largest retailer-owned cooperative announced today that Electronic Benefits Transfer Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is now an accepted payment method for orders placed via Instacart from its ShopRite, Fairway Market, Gourmet Garage and The Fresh Grocer locations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland. The cooperatives online shopping service, available directly on the banner brands websites, also accepts EBT SNAP payments.
Shoppers must enter their EBT card as the form of payment on their Instacart account and select items from the list of EBT SNAP-eligible products as part of their order. Another form of payment is required for delivery fees, tips and taxes.
Expanding online shopping EBT SNAP payment options beyond our retail digital channels will make fresh foods and essentials even more accessible for families in need, said Elizabeth Goodbread, Director of Digital Commerce at Wakefern Food Corp. This is an important additional step in advancing the fight against food insecurity in the communities our stores serve, adds Goodbread.
To subsidize costs for EBT SNAP participants, Instacart will waive delivery and pickup fees on the first three EBT SNAP orders through December 31, 2022 for customers using a valid EBT card associated with their Instacart account.

Customers in the U.S. can pay for online orders with a valid EBT card from participating retailers in select states, Instacart said on its website. You can shop at any participating retailer as long as the state that issued your EBT card participates in the SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot. Is It Possible To Pay Instacart Delivery And Service Fees Using Ebt
No, you cannot. Delivery and service fees cannot be paid through EBT cards on Instacart. This is because EBT cards can only be utilized for the purchase of grocery and food items that are approved as eligible by the USDA government. For any other purpose, such as for buying household items or paying for delivery charges, you must opt for some other payment method such as credit/debit card or cash.
On Instacart as well, youll have to add your debit/credit card as well if you intend to buy and pay for things other than SNAP-eligible ones.

How To Pay With Your Ebt Card Or Snap Card On Instacart
You must set up your EBT/SNAP card as an alternate mode of payment in your Instacart account before you can use it on Instacart. How to set up your EBT/SNAP card on Instacart
- First, create an Instacart profile.
- After your Instacart account has been verified and is running, click Account Setting.
- Save your EBT Card details by entering them as needed.
- To link your regular debit card with your Instacart account, click on Add another Card. This is especially important if you plan to shop for products not eligible for SNAP or EBT payment.
- Add the ZIP code of your city. This will tell you if your area is eligible for EBT and show you the closest retail stores that accept SNAP or EBT.
- You can add as many EBT products to your card as you like and then proceed to make payments. Choose your EBT card to be your payment method.

Online grocery shopping has taken off in the last few years.
Until recently, this time-saving option has not been available to folks that use EBT/SNAP benefits to purchase their groceries.
Fortunately, the United States Department of Agriculture , the federal agency that oversees the SNAP program launched the EBT Online Purchasing Pilot. This pilot program allows states to add online purchasing as an option for EBT cardholders.
Amazon and Walmart accept EBT payment online from just about every state.
However, there are some rules when it comes to paying with EBT online. You can only purchase EBT eligible items. You cant pay delivery fees, tips, or other associated charges with SNAP benefits. Those extra charges will have to be paid for with a different form of payment.
Unfortunately, Instacart recently joined the program, but currently only accept it at Aldi in select states.

Online grocery platform Instacart on Monday expanded its Electronic Benefits Transfer and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program offering, commonly known as EBT SNAP, to cover almost the entire country.
Low-income shoppers can now purchase groceries using EBT SNAP and Instacart in 10 additional statesColorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyomingthrough the Instacart app and retailers Instacart-powered e-commerce platforms.
The move brings the program’s reach to 49 states and Washington, D.C.
The first grocers to accept EBT SNAP online in these new markets are Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Cos. and Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market. With these expansions, Instacart now accepts EBT SNAP payments for more than 60 retail banners spanning more than 8,000 stores, opening its platform to more shoppers as grocery prices continue to climb.
Grocers of all sizes can now use Instacarts Carrot Payments to accept EBT SNAP payments online, reaching nearly 30 million people experiencing food insecurity across the U.S., Instacart said in a statement.
The expansion gives more consumers access to the convenience of same-day delivery and grocery pickup, Mastrorocco said.
We look forward to continuing to expand this program and enabling more retailers to accept EBT SNAP payments online through the Instacart Platform, Mastrorocco said.
Can You Use Ebt For Walmarts Delivery
Walmarts grocery delivery using EBT is currently available only in New York State.
However, you may be able to use EBT/SNAP for Walmart Grocery Pickup, depending on the state you live in.
Just order your groceries at walmart.com or through the Walmart mobile app. Put all of your groceries in the cart and select the time you want to pick up your groceries.
During checkout, select the EBT Card as your payment method. When you pick up your groceries, the Walmart associate will be able to swipe your card at the pickup.
When you get to Walmart to pick up your groceries, the associate will know that you are paying with EBT. Any items that are not eligible for EBT can be paid for with another payment method like credit or debit.
While its not as convenient as having your groceries delivered, it will be much more comfortable for whoever may be driving you to the store. They wont have to wait an hour or so while you do your shopping. And you wont feel like youre putting someone out so much.
However, using your EBT/SNAP benefits for pickup is not available in every state.

My best advice is just to try it out. Perhaps Walmart hasnt updated their website yet. Put a few items in your cart and act like you are going to check out. See if the app or website gives you the option to pay with EBT.

For the 40 million Americans currently receiving food stamps, the EBT card is how they access their benefits.
The EBT card acts as a debit card and allows the cardholder to purchase food that is on the approved list, from grocery stores and other merchants that are approved by the United States Department of Agriculture to accept food stamps.

NEW YORK, NY, Sept 28 – Grocery delivery services Instacart and Target Corp’s Shipt said on Wednesday they will expand their payment methods for low-income U.S. shoppers in line with the White House’s efforts to ramp up healthy eating and curtail diet-related diseases.
President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced plans to end hunger in the country and increase healthy eating initiatives by 2030. As part of the initiative, the Biden administration wants to update regulations that allow online shopping with programs such as food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children .

Can You Use Ebt For Aldi Delivery
Yes. Aldi will accept EBT payment through Instacart in select states. As The Instacart website does not note those states, check with Instacart or Aldi in your area to verify.
Like Walmart, Aldi uses Instacart for its delivery service. Thankfully, Instacart just joined the USDA pilot program that allows online purchasing for EBT customers.
So in many locations, you can now use your EBT card at Aldi through Instacart.
Ordering groceries to be delivered via Instacart is easy to do through the website or the mobile app. Youll input some personal information, such as your zip code, to show which stores are available in your area. Instacart doesnt work with every store, so just select the store that shows up on your app or the website.
Once youve picked your store, load up your virtual cart to place an order. In most cases, your Instacart order can be delivered within an hour.

You cannot tip your Instacart driver with an EBT card. Similar to Instacart delivery and service fees, tips cannot be paid using the SNAP/EBT benefits. You can tip the driver using the credit or debit card on your Instacart account or give cash at the time of delivery.
Be sure to add a secondary payment method to Instacart to tip your driver and pay for the Instacart delivery and service fees mentioned above. This payment method will also be needed if you purchase items that are not eligible for SNAP benefits.
