How Do I Go About Getting Snap

If you want to find out if you may be eligible to receive SNAP, visit myBenefits.ny.gov and click on Am I Eligible? to use the SNAP pre-screening eligibility tool. Please note: This pre-screening tool is not an application for SNAP.

In order to apply for SNAP, you need to file an electronic or paper application with your local county Department of Social Services, or, if you live in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with your local SNAP Center.

If you decide to submit a paper application, the SNAP office must give you an application form on the same day you ask for one. The office also must accept and register your application on the same day you turn it in.

You may submit, and the SNAP office must accept, your application as long as you have filled in your name, address and telephone number and signed the application. However, you should try to provide as much information as you can. Whatever information you cannot provide, a SNAP worker can help you complete at your eligibility interview.

You may have a complete eligibility interview done on the same day you file your application, or you may be asked to come back another day for a complete interview. If you qualify for SNAP, you must get them no later than 30 days from the date the office got your application.

What If I Am A Boarder Or I Live In Someone Elses Home

If you rent a room in someone elses home and do not get or pay for meals, you are considered to be a roomer. As a roomer, you can apply for SNAP as a separate household, so long as you purchase and prepare the majority of your meals separately from the other people in the house. 106 C.M.R.§361.230. See Question 35.

If you live in someone elses home and you pay that person for a room and at least half your weekly meals, you are considered to be a boarder. You are not eligible for SNAP benefits as a separate household. 106 C.M.R.§361.240 .

If the household where you board is getting SNAP, DTA will either include or exclude you in their SNAP benefits based on how much you pay for food. If excluded, DTA will then count what you pay for room and board as income to the host household.

If you do not pay a reasonable amount for meals, you must be included in the SNAP household of the household providing meals. That means your income will be counted in figuring the eligibility of the whole household. 106 C.M.R.§361.240. A reasonable amount is an amount that equals or exceeds the SNAP benefit level for your household size . 106 C.M.R.§361.240.

Are There Work Rules For Snap

Any member of your family who is between age 16 age 60 and not exempt must register for work during the SNAP application process. 106 C.M.R. § 362.310. SNAP work registration rules are different from the ABAWD time limit and ABAWD work rules. See Question 60.

When you sign the SNAP application, you are also agreeing to register for work. This means that, unless you are exempt, you agree that:

• You will not quit a job unless you have a good reason . This applies to jobs that are 30 hours per week or more.
• If you are working 30 hours or more, you will not reduce your hours to less than 30 hours a week unless you have a good reason.
• If you are offered a job, you must accept it unless you have a good reason to refuse. See Question 59 on “good cause.”

Exemptions from the work registration

Yes. The SNAP rules provide key exemptions from the SNAP work registration rules. 106 C.M.R. §362.310 The exemptions include if you:

• get TAFDC or EAEDC benefits
• are pregnant
• are physically or mentally unfit for employment
• earn more than $217.50 per week
• are a student enrolled in school at least half-time
• have applied for or get Unemployment Benefits
• care for a child under age 6 or a person with a disability
• are in a substance abuse treatment program

These exemptions are most important if DTA thinks you voluntarily quit a job within the past 60 days, or if you are on strike. They are similar to but more limited than the ABAWD time limit exemptions.

Tanf Benefits Can Affect Child Support

If you also enroll in Temporary Assistance to Needy Families , a national program that provides temporary cash assistance to families with dependent children, you most likely will not receive all of your child support payments. Your right to child support is temporarily assigned to the state, which receives the support instead.

This only lasts while you’re receiving TANF benefits, however. The funds are used to reimburse the state for the cash benefits provided to you while you’re enrolled. Depending on your state’s policy, you might be entitled to the first $50 of child support collected each month and any money left over after the state is reimbursed.

How Does Dta Count The Income Of An Ineligible Immigrant

Some ineligible immigrants live with other people who are eligible for SNAP, such as an immigrant parent living with U.S. citizen children. There are two different calculations depending on the immigration status:

Households with legally-present but ineligible immigrants

If you are lawfully residing in the U.S. but are ineligible for benefits or you choose not to be part of the SNAP household the SNAP benefits for the family members you live with are calculated using a special calculation. 106 C.M.R. § 365.520

The SNAP regulations define a broad group of immigrants who are considered lawfully residing. See 106 C.M.R. § 362.240. This list includes immigrants with work authorization such as applicants for asylum, TPS or pending VAWA petitions, as well as LPRs subject to the 5-year bar.

DTA’s calculation for households with lawfully present but ineligible immigrants involves three steps whether the ineligible but lawfully present immigrant is excluded and included in the calculation to arrive at the correct benefit under 106 C.M.R § 364.600.

What Are The Rules If I Am On Strike

If the reason you need SNAP benefits is because you are on a work strike, you cannot get SNAP unless you were income-eligible for SNAP before you went on strike. In other words, your union job paid low enough that your family would qualify for SNAP.

So, if you would have been SNAP-eligible before the strike, DTA will count either the value of your current income or your income before you went on strike to calculate the SNAP benefits for your household, whichever income amount is higher. 106 C.M.R § 361.240.

You are not considered on strike if:

• your former boss locked you out or permanently replaced you, or

Ms. Bradford said she was having trouble adding Augyst to her Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, commonly known as food stamps. Dr. Klein referred her to Deanna White, a paralegal at the hospitals medical-legal partnership with the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati.

To add a newborn to a mothers SNAP benefits in Hamilton County, Ohio, the mother must call the Department of Job & Family Services or go on their website to report the birth. A caseworker will then send mom a baby packet to complete a

nd send back. Included in this packet is a new household verification form that moms landlord must sign to confirm that the child lives with her. She also has to send back proof that she has applied for a social security number for her child. Ive worked at Legal Aid for 12 years, said Ms. White. I cant tell you how many times Ive read in case worker notes that the baby wasnt added to SNAP benefits because mom failed to return the new baby packet. Its a very common barrier.
