Child Pandemic Food Assistance Cards Being Distributed In Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa The Iowa Department of Human Services and Department of Education announced Wednesday the distribution plan for food assistance benefits for eligible Iowa school children impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer cards are being distributed through “multiple rounds of mailings” starting this week, so officials are advising parents to check their mail for their cards.

We want to make Iowa families aware of the arrival of the P-EBT cards to prevent families from throwing the envelopes away, not realizing what they contain, said Janee Harvey, DHS Division Administrator of Adult, Child and Family Services.

Households with kids in Pre-K through 12 who temporarily lost access to Free and Reduced Price School Meals during the 2020-2021 school year due to pandemic-related school schedule changes and closures are eligible for the program, according to DHS.

The new cards will:

  • Be sent in white envelopes addressed with the child’s name with an Austin, Texas return address
  • Be white with black font and include “IOWA P-EBT” printed at the top
  • Have the name of the eligible child on it

Each card will initially include benefits for eligible days, as reported by schools, from September through December 2020. DHS advises families to keep this card since they will use the same card to access later benefits.

Dhs To Disburse Another Round Of P

Another round of pandemic assistance is on the way for Iowa families who lost access to free or reduced lunches during the school year.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Human Services wants to make sure families have enough food this summer.

At least four different food assistance programs are happening across Iowa. And summer can be a hard time for kids to meet their nutritional needs. Especially for those getting assistance during the school year.

To help, DHS is disbursing another round of pandemic assistance to Iowa families. The assistance comes through P-EBT cards, given to families who lost access to free or reduced lunches because of the pandemic.

At the end of last month, DHS mailed new cards to qualifying families for the first round of the summer. Those who qualify should have received their benefits by the first week of June. DHS advises families to keep this card for more benefits on the way.

Were about to put another round of funding on those cards, so Its also really important that families dont throw out those cards. Once those funds are gone were going to keep putting money on those cards for a few more rounds of food assistance support, said Janee Harvey, DHS Division Administrator of Adult, Children and Family Services.

So school-aged children, theyre going to have access to food all summer long. And were doing it through these cards that people have already received, or theyll be getting in the mail, said Harvey.

Many claimants ask, What do you need for the food stamps interview? because they want to be sure to successfully complete this portion of the application process. While each applicants personal situation is different, candidates should consider bringing the following for each member in their households:

  • Proof of self: Claimants may need to verify their identities. To do so, petitioners should bring photo identification cards or Social Security cards.
  • Verification of citizenship: Petitioners need to prove that they and their family members are U.S. nationals or citizens. As a result, applicants should bring documentation, such as passports or naturalization records.
  • Confirmation of income: Candidates wondering what is required for food stamps must know that they will need to prove how much income they earned within the past 30 days. Therefore, claimants should bring any recent pay stubs or self-employment documentation that validates their earnings from that time period.
  • Documentation of possessions: Applicants will need to provide their DHS caseworkers with documentation that validates some of their household assets. Examples of possessions that candidates would need to verify include bank accounts, trust funds and stocks.

Soup Kitchens In Iowa

Soup kitchens serve cooked meals on-site to needy people at no cost. Like food pantries, they normally receive their food from local food banks.

Soup kitchens take care mostly of homeless people and people who do not have the means to cook for themselves.

They require storage, cleaning, and cooking equipment as they have to do food preparation, serving, and cleaning after the meals.

Food pantries are typically located in facilities where received food can be stored and handled in a safe and sanitary manner.

Each food pantry serves a designated local area and most of them require prior registration and approval before food can be served to a particular individual or a family.
