Pandemic Food Stamp Program Aimed At Children In Florida Was Approved
DORAL, FL One-time Pandemic Food Stamp Program aimed at helping an estimated of 2.7 million children in Florida was approved.
Through this program, that will distribute more than $1 billion, families with children in poverty will receive an additional $375 in benefits over a 30-day period beginning on November 15.
Children under age 6 who went to child care and whose families were already enrolled in SNAP, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, can apply as well for this benefit. They may receive it first, reports Orlando Sentinel.
The beneficiaries will get the money electronically and they can use it for food at grocery stores, selected online grocers and farmers markets.
The Pandemic Food Stamp Program was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in April to aid those children that depend on the school meals distributed during the summer and this week it was announced its approval.
Of course, the real winners here are the kids, whose dinner plates will be full, wrote Cindy Huddleston, an attorney with the Florida Policy Institute, an organization that played an important role in the approval by persuading the Florida Department of Children and Families and Gov. Ron DeSantis to apply for the funds. However, this is also a victory for those who made their voices heard, she said.

Why Didnt Florida Apply For Food
Floridas failure to apply for $820 million in pandemic food-stamp benefits left me wondering: Whats the political advantage to Ron DeSantis for such a puzzling decision?
Part of his march to the presidency? Appealing to the Trump base? Florida was one of only eight states who didnt apply for the aid to hungry children Im very curious to his misguided decision this time.

In Florida, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP and once known as food stamps, is administered through the states Department of Children and Families.
In recent weeks, the state has worked to waive some of the programs requirements and to temporarily increase recipients maximum benefits.
Working to handle a deluge of people, the department has also expanded customer call center hours.
Heres what you need to know:
How does SNAP work?
Floridians making a gross income of less than or equal to 200 percent above the federal poverty line could potentially be eligible for SNAP. For a single person, that would equate to a gross income of $2,082 or less a month. The states website lays out full criteria and reasons why a person may be ineligible.
SNAP recipients get an electronic benefits card, similar to a debit card, that can be used to buy food grocery items. It cannot be used for things like alcohol, cigarettes or hot foods. In Florida, different recipients get their benefits on different days.
How have benefits changed since the pandemic?
And, following the federal Families First Coronavirus Act, Gov. Ron DeSantis moved to temporarily waive work requirements for those participating in the program.
