How To Renew Food Stamps Texas

Other Things To Consider

Medicaid & Food Stamp Benefits Information
  • Your food stamps are calculated based on the month that you apply for benefits. If there is a month that you get paid 3 times in the month they will count this amount as your regular income although this wont happen again for the year. Consider applying in a month where you only get paid twice per month to ensure you get the maximum benefit.
  • If your income is above the gross income limit and you are disabled you may only get the minimum amount typically $15 per month. You qualify for food stamps based on your disability, but your disability income is above the gross income which is why you only receive $15 per month.
  • If you have questions about your food stamps try visiting the office for answers. You can try getting an answer by phone, but the first person you speak to at these offices may not be the best source of information. Your case manager at the office can provide you with the most accurate information.

I created this article because of the countless number of clients who question why they are receiving only $15 a month for food stamps. While everyones situation is different the criteria for calculating monthly food stamp amounts is the same.

To give yourself the best chance to receive the maximum monthly amount of food stamps it is important to know the rules.

Understanding the Food Stamp Algorithm, who is in your household, what deductions you qualify for and how to recalculate your benefits can help to increase your amount of monthly food stamps.

Texas Also Waives SNAP Interview Requirements

AUSTIN Texas Health and Human Services announced today SNAP and Medicaid benefit renewals currently due will automatically be renewed so existing clients can maintain continuity of coverage during the COVID-19 public health crisis.

During this difficult time, were making sure Texans in need continue to receive their food and medical benefits without the added worry of having to renew their coverage in the midst of a crisis, said Wayne Salter, HHS Deputy Executive Commissioner for Access and Eligibility Services.

To ensure benefits continue, Texas requested and received federal approval to automatically extend benefits for recipients who were up for renewal. Renewing the SNAP and Medicaid applications automatically means that those who were up for a renewal do not have to call or complete their renewal to receive continuous coverage. SNAP and Medicaid benefits are extended until further notice, and Texas HHS will continue to provide updates to the public during the coming months.

Additionally, as authorized by section 2302 of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, Texas is also waiving interview requirements for households applying for SNAP. As part of that, households are not required to complete an interview before approval if identity has been verified and mandatory verification steps are completed.

Why Its Important To Know Your Household Size For Food Stamps

Deadline Passes for SNAP, EBT Renewal

Your food stamp office factors the gross income of everyone you list as a member of your household.

In my example, had I listed my cousin as a household member I would have received a much lower amount of food stamps because they wouldve taken into account the income he was making at his job. We werent sharing food, so he didnt need to be listed as a household member.

Here are other examples of people who may live in the same house, but dont need to be listed as a household member.

  • A roommate
  • Your girlfriend/boyfriend. From the things Ive read the food stamp offices looks at this relationship the same way they do a roommate. Now, if the girlfriend gets pregnant and has a child things change. The parent of your child, even if unmarried, is viewed the same way as a spouse and would need to be listed as part of your household.
  • An uncle who is unemployed but living with you
  • A cousin living with you to attend college
  • Someone who you rented a room to on Craigslist
  • Children who live with you who are older than 22
  • A caregiver who takes care of a senior

These are just a few examples, but the bottom line, if you do not share and prepare food together with the individual they do not need to be listed as part of your household.

Who should and shouldnt be considered apart of your household income can be confusing, so be sure to ask your food stamp case manager about any unique living situations you may have.

What Is Texas Food Stamps

The Texas SNAP food benefits program provides monetary stipends to enrollees with limited financial resources. In turn, beneficiaries may use these funds to purchase food for themselves and other qualifying members of their households. When petitioners submit their food stamps benefits applications, their claims are valid for a pre-determined period of time. After this time period passes, enrollees are responsible for reapplying for SNAP, should they still need benefits.

Once petitioners are deemed eligible to receive SNAP food benefits in TX, they are provided with a set amount of funding. However, enrollees must remember there is a maximum monthly amount of food assistance benefits in Texas that they may receive. These limits are determined in relation to family sizes and are as follows:

  • One-person families may not receive more than $192.
  • Households with two people cannot collect more than $352.
  • Three-person units are awarded $504 or less.
  • Families with four members may only collect $640 or less.
  • Five-member households can only receive up to $760.

In addition, households with more than five members may also receive SNAP benefits. To calculate these benefit amounts, petitioners who fall into these categories must add an additional $144 for each member of the household to the maximum benefit total of the program.
