Expansion Of Snap Benefits For Students
Effective February 21, 2021
Per, the Consolidated Appropriation Act of 2021, these new categories of students are now temporarily eligible for SNAP benefits:
In addition, students who are half-time or greater are now able to be considered for SNAP benefits, but must still meet the expected family contribution or work-study requirement, in addition to any other financial and non-financial SNAP eligibility criteria.
These temporary extensions will expire 30 days after the COVID-19 public health emergency has been ended.
Am I Eligible For Snap
SNAP is for people with a low household income and resources. It is also for legal immigrant children under 18, people who get disability assistance or benefits and for veterans and their families. Families with ineligible people can still apply for benefits for household members. A family cannot have more than $5,000 in resources that can be used to buy food. Resources include cash, your bank accounts, and any amount over $15,000 of the value a households vehicle. Your home is not counted as a resource. Childless adults without disabilities who work less than 20 hours a week and are not in a work program can get SNAP benefits for 3 months every 3 years.

Abbott Announces Extension Of Snap Benefits Through November
AUSTIN, Texas The office of Gov. Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission will provide more than $310 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program food benefits for the month of November. It is part of the state’s response to COVID-19.
The allotments are expected to help more than 1.5 million Texas households, a release from Abbott’s office said.
“Our continued investment in emergency SNAP benefits has ensured Texas families can put food on the table throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” Abbott said in a prepared statement. “Thank you to HHSC and USDA for ensuring these resources reach Texans across the state.”
Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter said the extension of the benefits was especially timely with holidays approaching.
“We are proud to be able to help Texans get nutritious food for their families and have peace of mind as they celebrate the holiday season together,” Salter said.
HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size, and all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments. This additional emergency allotment should appear in recipients accounts by Nov. 30.
The emergency November allotments are in addition to the more than $4.8 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020.

TANF recipients assign their right to child support collections to the state. This means the family will receive the first $75 collected during any month that a current child support payment is made. The remainder of the child support payment made will be applied toward reimbursing the state and federal governments for the TANF benefits received by the family. When the family no longer receives TANF, all current support payments made will be sent to the custodial parent.
Parents who receive certain types of Medicaid assign their right to cash medical support collections to the state. This money will be redirected to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to reimburse the state and federal governments for the Medicaid benefits received by the family.
If the children receive Medicaid benefits, but the adult does not, the adult has the option to request child support services.

AUSTIN, Texas As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is providing another $307 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program food benefits in January, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The allotments are expected to help more than 1.5 million Texas households.
This emergency SNAP support will ensure more than 1.5 million families can continue to put food on the table, said Gov. Abbott in a statement. Thanks to the USDA for their continued collaboration with HHSC to provide healthy meals to Texans across the state.
As Texans ring in the new year, this additional support will help families start 2022 with food on the table for themselves and their children, said Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter.
HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size, and all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments.
This additional emergency allotment should appear in recipients accounts by January 31.
The emergency January allotments are in addition to the more than $5.4 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020, Gov. Abbotts office said in a news release.
