New York Food Stamp Program

In order to help support low-income families, the New York food stamps program is available to provide locals with financial access to nutritious groceries. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a federally funded program that operates in all states, including the Empire State. While food assistance regulations are established on a national level, each state is responsible for maintaining its local program. As a result, SNAP in New York is managed by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance . This is part of the states Department of Social Services .

Across the state, the OTDA determines who is eligible to receive SNAP food stamps. This department also works in conjunction with federal regulations to set program standards that determine how petitioners may apply for admission to the food stamps program. The following sections explain these requirements, as well as provide information regarding what documents claimants need to have on hand when they submit their materials. Additionally, the sections below address additional facets of the SNAP enrollment process, such as how enrollees may access their funds and where they can use benefits.

About Citizenship And Residency Requirements For Snap

Buying Meat and Milk With Help, but Not Food Stamps

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP has special rules you have to follow. You have to live in the state where you apply. You have to be a citizen or legal resident of the United States, too.

You have to prove that you meet these requirements with documents. Documents that can help you prove that you qualify include:

  • A birth certificate.
  • A Social Security card.
  • Another document issued by the government.

Do you not qualify for food stamps? You can still apply for food stamps for the people who live with you. For example, you can apply for your kids to get SNAP benefits. Just keep in mind that how much you earn will still be counted in the application.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, there are special rules you have to follow to get benefits:

  • You have to live in the U.S. legally for five years.
  • You have to get disability benefits.
  • You have to be 17 or younger.
  • You have to be asking for asylum from your country.

If you meet some or all of these rules, you might qualify.

Your state might have a SNAP calculator that can tell you if you might get food stamps. The tool will ask questions about the different factors that can make you qualify, like what you earn, if you are disabled and if you are a citizen.

The state of New York has canceled all in-person appointments for SNAP applications. There are still many different ways to apply for food benefits. The application form is available online at this link.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City has determined that there are to be no negative actions taken on anyones case. All recertifications for SNAP have been postponed and individuals with an upcoming recertification will not need to recertify to continue receiving benefits.

Expedited benefits are available in New York State for individuals who meet certain conditions of income and cash access. This would give the applicant their SNAP benefit within five days of applying. According to the website, the only way to determine if your household is eligible for SNAP benefits is to apply, although some guidelines are listed.

The income guidelines are provided and vary based on the household size and whether the family includes an elderly or disabled member, or households with dependent care expenses. Households applying for SNAP also dont need to pass a savings test to get benefits, so any assets arent considered during the eligibility phase.

How Much Can You Make And Still Get Food Stamps

There are food stamp income guidelines that you have to meet to get benefits. The amount you can make and still get food stamps depends on how many people live in your house.

There are income rules for your gross income and your net income . Some people only have to meet net income requirements, like seniors and disabled people.

Heres an example.

In 2019, if you were the only person in your house trying to get food stamps, you could only make $1,316 before taxes or $1,012 after taxes.

The income rules change every year. Different states have special rules, too. So make sure to double-check these income rules every year to see if you might qualify.

The main difference between gross and net income is taxes. But you can also make your net income lower to make your chances of getting food stamps higher. You can do this by making deductions that the government gives you.

You can make your net income lower by:

  • Taking away 20 percent of what your household made.
  • Taking away a deduction if you cared for a dependent kid or loved one.
  • Taking away a deduction for your medical bills if you are a senior or disabled and paid over a certain amount on medical bills.
  • Taking away a deduction for utility bills like rent, water and electricity.
  • Taking away a standard deduction. This is a number decided by the government based on how many people live with you and are applying for SNAP.

Your state will tell you how much you can make your income lower by for every deduction.
