Illinois Snap Recipients Will Begin Receiving Maximum Benefit Amounts This Week

The Illinois Department of Human Services announced Monday that more than 450,000 Illinois households will receive additional Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits beginning Wednesday, April 8.

Those eligible for the additional benefits should receive them by April 20, IDHS said in a media release. The additional funds are intended to help Illinoisans obtain food and support for their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The maximum SNAP benefit amounts will be implemented for April and May.

No Illinoisan should ever have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, especially during an ongoing public health emergency, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in the release. Expanding the amount of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits people receive will help families stay safe and healthy in the coming months.

SNAP provides food assistance to low-income people and families living in the United States. It is a federal aid program administered by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and benefits are distributed at the state level.

Increased benefits will be automatically loaded onto SNAP recipients Link cards, and there is no need for anyone to re-apply, visit an office, or call. All new applications authorized in April will also receive the maximum allotment for their household size.

Maximum amounts per household size are as follows:

1: $194

How And Where To Use The Snap Benefits

When approved, food stamp beneficiaries will get the Electronic Benefits Transfer cards Illinois Link Card. The beneficiaries can use their cards at any SNAP approved grocery stores and Farmers Markets that are authorized by the United States Department of Agriculture . With their EBT Card, food stamp recipients can buy any food to be eaten at home by people, including baby food, non-alcoholic beverages, and seasonings. Allowed are also seeds and plants to grow food for a familys consumption. Non-grocery items such as cleaning products, pet food, paper products, alcohol, or tobacco are not allowed.

How Do I Pay Dhs Back For The Overpayment

Illinois risks losing $18 million over food stamp processing

There are 2 ways DHS can collect a food stamp overpayment from you: repayment and recoupment.

If you are still getting SNAP or TANF benefits:

When you are charged with an overpayment, a letter asking for payment will be sent to you. The letter gives you the option of paying the entire claim or you can pay by recoupment. Recoupment means that DHS will keep part of your current benefits each month until the overpayment is paid off. This is most commonly used in cases that are currently receiving benefits. The amount taken from your monthly benefit amount depends on the reason for the overpayment.

  • If your overpayment was an “intentional program violation” the monthly recoupment amount is the greater of $20 or 20% of your current monthly benefit. For example, if your household currently gets $200 per month in food stamps, DHS would take out $40 each month until the overpayment amount is paid back. This would leave you with $160 in food stamps each month.
  • If your overpayment was determined to be a client error that was a mistake or an agency error, the monthly recoupment amount is the greater of $10 or 10% of your current monthly benefit. For example, if your household currently receives $200 per month in food stamps, DHS would keep $20 per month until the overpayment amount is paid back. This would leave you with $180 in food stamps each month.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students who normally get free or reduced-price school meals may be eligible for a program to help families buy groceries. This program is called Pandemic-EBT . P-EBT is a temporary food benefit program operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. P-EBT only provides benefits for days that students lack access to an in-school lunch. P-EBT provides $6.82 per each school day that schoolchildren are engaged in remote learning. These benefits are provided on a card that can be used like a debit card to purchase food atany grocery store that accepts LINK cards.

Will County Public And Government Assistance

DHS wants welfare income guidelines raised

The county of Will relies on federal government grants and support from the Department of Human Services. The funds are used to help meet the needs of the disabled, low income, children, and seniors. As a result of this support, the county can provide them with food, emergency energy bill assistance, and other forms of financial help.

The main public assistance programs are below, but the offerings that are under highest demand include SNAP food stamps, heating bill help from LIHEAP, and grants from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF. Each has its own application process in place, and the Will County office can provide more details on each service.

Basic needs can be met by welfare, also known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families . This is a federal resource that assists families with children, pregnant women, and single parents that meet income qualifications. Qualified individuals can be provided short term cash assistance and other government aid, and the grants can be used to pay for housing costs , food, medical care, and more.

The money from TANF can also be used to pay for job and employment services, as the goal of Will County DHS is to eventually get people off of public aid. Funds can be used to pay for job retention services, GED preparation, vocational training, ESL classes, post-secondary education, and even child care costs while the parent is working.
