When you are found eligible for SNAP benefits, you will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer card. Your benefits are automatically loaded onto the card each month. The card will work like a debit card with funds deducted from the account with each purchase. The card can only be used at stores that are approved to accept them.
What If I Need To Use My Benefits Outside Of Texas
Take your Lone Star Card with you.
If you are moving out of state or do not intend to return to Texas, you must report your status change within 10 days by calling 2-1-1 or logging into YourTexasBenefits.com.
If you get SNAP benefits:
You should be able to use your card at stores that take food benefits in other states. If it doesn’t work, call 800-777-7328.
To find a store in another state that takes food benefits, you can:
- Look for a sign in the store’s window or door that says they take food benefits
If you get TANF benefits:
You should be able to use your card at stores that accept cash benefits in other states.
To be safe, withdraw your money from your cash account before you leave Texas.
Before shopping at a store, find out if the store charges a fee and how much they charge.

When Will Eligible Households Receive Benefits
Eligible households that are not already certified to receive SNAP and will have a monthly gross income of less than $150 AND less than $100 in cash/checking/savings in the month of application, or have monthly housing costs that exceed their gross monthly income and cash/checking/savings for the month of application will receive benefits within seven days from the date of application. Other households will receive notification of determination within thirty days from the date of application.

Obtain the Food Stamp/Medicaid/TANF Renewal form, available online from the DFCS website. To have the application mailed to you, call DFCS at 423-4746. On the form, provide your name, date of birth, Social Security number, address and phone number. Include similar information for anyone else living in the household. Next, go through the application and complete all sections labeled Food Stamps Only or For Food Stamp Program Only. Additional questions include whether anyone in your household is attending school, has been convicted of a crime or has medical expenses. Sign and date the form. Return it to your local DCFS office in person, by mail or by fax. DCFS provides a list of location on its website.

As of January 22, 2021, the Biden Administration passed a law to increase Pandemic EBT benefits by 15% to help fight childhood hunger.
