How Do I Go About Getting Snap
If you want to find out if you may be eligible to receive SNAP, visit myBenefits.ny.gov and click on Am I Eligible? to use the SNAP pre-screening eligibility tool. Please note: This pre-screening tool is not an application for SNAP.
In order to apply for SNAP, you need to file an electronic or paper application with your local county Department of Social Services, or, if you live in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with your local SNAP Center.
If you decide to submit a paper application, the SNAP office must give you an application form on the same day you ask for one. The office also must accept and register your application on the same day you turn it in.
You may submit, and the SNAP office must accept, your application as long as you have filled in your name, address and telephone number and signed the application. However, you should try to provide as much information as you can. Whatever information you cannot provide, a SNAP worker can help you complete at your eligibility interview.
You may have a complete eligibility interview done on the same day you file your application, or you may be asked to come back another day for a complete interview. If you qualify for SNAP, you must get them no later than 30 days from the date the office got your application.

New Standard Medical Deduction
Households with elderly participants or participants with a disability may receive one of the following deductions from their income:
- A Standard Medical Deduction of $160 minus a $35 disregard which equals $125 or,
- An actual monthly out-of-pocket medical expense deduction, minus a $35 disregard when expenses exceed the $160 SMD amount.
Participants are required to verify expenses over $35 to receive the SMD. All expenses must be verified when a participant chooses to claim actual out-of-pocket medical expenses above $160.
Renewal Requirements Are Being Reinstated
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service waiver to extend certification periods is ending. Nutrition Assistance and Cash Assistance recipients whose benefits are set to expire on or after May 31, 2021, will need to renew their benefits in order to continue receiving assistance, if they have already received a six-month extension since November 2020. Affected households will receive a notice with instructions on how to complete the renewal process.

The SNAP Employment and Training program is funded by a grant with US Department of Agriculture , Food and Nutrition Services . The SNAP E& T program only assists SNAP recipients and focuses on Able Bodied Adults without Dependents . SNAP E& T assists participants in discovering, reaching and maintaining their employment goals. Depending on the availability of funds SNAP E& T funds may be used to support a variety of education, training, and employment related supportive services for SNAP E& T participants. Expanded Snap Eligibility For College Students During The Covid
During the COVID-19 emergency, there are new rules for the SNAP program which will allow more college students to get benefits.
- If you are a student eligible to participate in a state or federal work-study program, you may now also be eligible for SNAP, even if you arent currently employed in work-study.
- If your expected family contribution is $0, and you meet other SNAP eligibility requirements, you are eligible for SNAP.

These new SNAP eligibility rules will last until one month after the public health emergency from COVID-19 is officially lifted. If you are able to get benefits thanks to these new rules, your benefits will last until your next recertification even if the public health emergency is ended first.

Important Information About Recertifications
- Recertifications: If you receive a Cash Assistance or SNAP recertification notice by mail or an ACCESS HRA alert that you need to recertify, you must submit your recertification or your benefits will stop. You can use ACCESS HRA, fax, mail, or a drop box at open centers to submit your recertification. Please make sure that we have your correct phone number. - CA 6-month mailer and SNAP periodic report: Starting July 2021, if you do not return your SNAP periodic report or Cash Assistance mailer your case will close.
How Long Will I Get Help
You can get SNAP benefits for as long as you are eligible for help. You will be required to complete a mid-certification and a recertification each year you get SNAP to make sure your household is still eligible. If you do not return your information by the deadline on the form, you may lose your benefits.
- Your mid-certification will happen halfway through your benefit period. You will get a form in the mail that you will need to complete and return to the Family Support Division.
- Around the end of your SNAP benefit period, you will get a recertification form in the mail. You will need to complete this form, return it to the Family Support Division, and complete an interview to continue getting SNAP benefits.

In New York State, the SNAP Program now allows you to have more money in a checking or savings account, or even a retirement account, without affecting your eligibility for SNAP benefits. This means having money in a savings, checking or retirement account, or having other resources, will not keep you from being eligible for SNAP benefits, as long as you meet the income guidelines.
