About the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps low-income households in Colorado purchase food. It provides a monthly benefit that helps families and individuals buy the food they need for good health.
The benefit is provided based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. Electronic Benefit Transfer cards are used to receive the benefit and can be used similar to debit cards at participating food stores. The benefit can be doubled in value by shopping at participating markets and food stores that support the Double Up Food Bucks program.
SNAP is part of a federal nutrition program to help low-income households purchase food. County human services departments are responsible for determining eligibility and authorizing SNAP.
What you need to know
Earned And Unearned Income
Your income records are one of the most important components of a successful SNAP application. The first thing your local SNAP office will need to do is verify that your household falls within the SNAP guidelines for both income and resources. In some cases, your state also may offer an online screening tool that can help you determine that your income meets appropriate SNAP eligibility criteria.
To be approved for food stamps, you typically need to show that your household income is at the federal poverty level. This level is defined by the federal government and represents what a household needs to earn in order to afford basic necessities like shelter, food, and basic utilities. The federal poverty level is a consistent standard used to judge eligibility for many different government assistance programs, and it is adjusted each year. The poverty level varies based on household size.
To document your income, you can provide several different kinds of documents: paycheck stubs, tax records, bank statements, or even a letter or formal statement from your employer verifying your income. You must include documentation of any unearned income for example, benefits award letters from your state or the Social Security Administration, child support award letters, or statements showing payment of dividends, pension payments, and other sources of income.

Do You Have To Work To Claim Food Stamps
Yes, SNAP has two sets of work requirements.
If you are aged 16-59 and able to work, you will probably need to meet the general work requirements to get food stamps.
This means registering for work and participating in SNAP Employment and Training or workfare if assigned by your state SNAP agency.
You must also take a suitable job if offered and not voluntarily quit a job or reduce your work hours below 30 a week without a good reason.
However, you don’t have to comply with the general work requirements if any of the below applies to you.
Extra Rules For Workers Without Kids
If you’re age 18-49, able to work and don’t have any kids, you may need to meet both the general work requirements and an additional work requirement for ABAWDS, which stands for able bodied adult without dependents.
This is in order to get food stamps for more than three months in three years, which is the time limit.
You can meet the ABAWD work requirement by doing any of the below things:
- Work at least 80 hours a month. Work can be for pay, for goods or services , unpaid, or as a volunteer
- Participate in a work program at least 80 hours a month. A work program could be SNAP Employment and Training or another federal, state, or local work program
- Participate in a combination of work and work program hours for a total of at least 80 hours a month
- Participate in workfare for the number of hours assigned to you each month
Similar to above, there are exceptions to the ABAWD work requirement and time limit.
This applies to you if you’re any of the below things:
- Unable to work due to a physical or mental limitation
- Have someone under 18 in your household
- Excused from the general work requirements
If you have to meet the ABAWD work requirement but you dont, you will lose your benefits after three months.
To get food stamps again, you must meet the ABAWD work requirement for a 30-day period or become excused.
Otherwise, you need to wait until the end of your three-year period, when youll get another three months under the time limit.
