What Kind Of Areas Do You Work In Do People Have A Problem With Access To Food

February food stamp money coming early

In central Texas, we have quite a large service area. We have Austin, Round Rock, but then we go up to Waco. Our service area is two times the size of Massachusetts. A lot of the area that we serve is urban, but a lot of it is rural. And there is a need.

There are, oddly enough, food deserts in areas where there is no grocery store close enough to take one or two buses. People are shopping at the dollar store or the convenience story. And then in the rural areas, Ive heard of situations where local grocery stores are unable to afford the debit machine to accept the Snap card so thats actually an issue as well. In both rural and urban areas, theres issues with food access.

You Said You Service Rural Areas Are Food Deserts Something That You See

The food desert situation goes hand in hand with the challenges that we face. Some areas have very limited options on where you can purchase your food, and if its a corner store, it would likely be more expensive food or slightly more expensive than grocery store, and obviously in terms of the healthy options those are all a lot more limited.

In our state there is a program called double bucks.

Its kind of a nation wide movement. Farmers markets that have EBT machines, that accept Snap benefits, and other Fed programs basically double the value of the benefits that you are spending at that farmers market. I dont want to say that you are getting twice the amount the food, but you are doubling the value of the benefits. Its making it more affordable, and in a lot of places its kind of also supporting local produce and local farmers.

In north Alabama, they are trying to pilot some double bucks programs to see if they can develop it across the state. Thats kind of a way to address the food desert situation and it just helps to connect more low-income households with fresh food. Thats something that I am really interested in.

I have found that representatives from both sides can get behind the double bucks program. They are really supportive of it.

Access returns to EBT food stamp cards users after outage

Last year because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the federal government authorized the issuance of emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for households across the nation. These emergency benefits added to the normal amount of SNAP benefits each month as long as a state of emergency existed in our state. Tennessees State of Emergency Order ended in November 2021, so the additional emergency SNAP benefits some SNAP recipients have been receiving will end for their households as of December 31, 2021.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides nutritional assistance benefits to children and families, the elderly, the disabled, unemployed and working families. SNAP helps supplement monthly food budgets of families with low-income to buy the food they need to maintain good health and allow them to direct more of their available income toward essential living expenses. DHS staff determines the eligibility of applicants based on guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture . The primary goals of the program are to alleviate hunger and malnutrition and to improve nutrition and health in eligible households. DHS has a dual focus on alleviating hunger and establishing or re-establishing self-sufficiency.

Can Children Who Are Too Young To Attend School Qualify For P

About 220,000 in Colorado could lose food stamps because of shutdown

Young children in SNAP households also can qualify for P-EBT. Many children under age 6 who didnt attend a public school still can receive P-EBT. They qualify if they live in a household that received SNAP assistance in any month between October 2020 and May 2021 and if a school in the childs county was virtual or hybrid.

Young childrens benefits are calculated in the same manner as those for schoolchildren. These benefits are based on whether any school in their county was virtual or hybrid. Benefits for children under age 6 who receive SNAP and are not in school are retroactive only to October 2020. Congress passed legislation extending P-EBT to these children in October.
