Nebraska food stamps provide numerous enrollees and their dependents with financial relief. This program, which is officially called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , extends monetary benefits to claimants who qualify as low-income and need help purchasing groceries for their households. As a result, claimants who qualify to receive SNAP in Nebraska are awarded funds they may use to help supplement their grocery budgets each month. In many cases, these benefits permit enrollees to purchase food items they otherwise would not have been able to afford.

The goal of this food assistance program is to help ensure that families across the country have access to sufficient amounts of nutritious food for each meal. Although this program is available throughout the United States, each state oversees its own version of the program. In Nebraska, the Department of Health and Human Services spearheads this program. Therefore, the DHHS manages the SNAP food stamps initiative and ensures that benefits are being distributed to families in need. To help prospective applicants understand this program, the following sections explain what petitioners need to do in order to prepare their applications for the DHHS to review. The information below also explains what petitioners can do if their claims expire or if the department rejects their applications altogether.

When Will I Receive My Benefits

If you qualify, benefits should be received in the EBT account 30 days after the application was submitted. If your income met the requirements for expedited processing, then benefits should appear within seven days of the application submission. Moving forward, benefits will be available at 8 a.m. CT on the scheduled date , which is based on the last digit of the head-of-households Social Security number:

  • Ending in 1 or 2: 1st of the month
  • Ending in 3 or 4: 2nd of the month
  • Ending in 5 or 6: 3rd of the month
  • Ending in 7 or 8: 4th of the month
  • Ending in 9 or 0: 5th of the month

When Do You Start Receiving Snap Benefits After Applying In Nebraska

SNAP benefits in Nebraska are allotted to accepted households. However, it takes some time for the DHHS to review applications and verification documents. The process can take 30 to 45 days from the date of submission.

Once approved, a participating household will begin receiving benefits for the month in which it is eligible for benefits. If that is that month in which they applied, then SNAP food benefits will be available for that month. Typically, when residents apply earlier in the month, they will receive reduced benefits for that month but their full allotment the next month.

Applicants who demonstrate immediate need for food assistance and qualify for the expedited process can obtain benefits within seven days of application submission.

After participants begin receiving their food stamp benefits, they will continue receiving them on the same day each month. The specific day that benefits are disbursed depends on the participantsâ Social Security Number . These funds will be automatically deposited into an EBT account and available for immediate use.

Which Food Items Can You Buy Using Food Stamps In Nebraska

The SNAP program enables beneficiaries to purchase a wide variety of foods to feed themselves and their families. Because the goal of the program is to increase access to nutritious foods in order to promote healthy diets, most permitted foods are considered staple foods.

Staple foods permitted for purchased under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fall into several categories:

  • Cereals and breads
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy

Besides fresh products such as deli turkey and individual bananas, residents are permitted to purchase variations of the same products. For instance, instead of bagged rice, recipients can purchase a frozen meal with rice. Likewise, SNAP benefits will allow a participant to purchase fruit cups rather than fresh fruit.

The varieties of staple foods that are acceptable allow SNAP participants to have a healthy diet while still being able to make choices about their meals. Moreover, these options allow beneficiaries with dietary restrictions to still benefit from SNAP assistance. For example, instead of dairy milk, residents can purchase almond-based milk.

Additionally, certain plants and seeds can be purchased with food stamps. Eligible seeds include those that will produce edible foods. This includes tomato, potato, carrot or beet seeds.

Snap Benefits Increase This Month Under The Thrifty Food Plan

Nebraskas SNAP recipients will see a moderate increase in their benefits starting this month due to an update in the federal plan affecting food stamps benefits.

This change comes after the U.S. Department of Agriculture reevaluated the Thrifty Food Plan, which sets SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, benefits for the country. Recipients can expect, in general, a $12-$16 increase per person, per month. The new plan increases the purchasing power of the plan by 21%, said Shannon Grotrian, economic assistance programs administrator for Nebraskas Department of Health and Human Services.

Every year, theres small cost of living type increases that occur, but this is the first time since 1975 that the entire plan, the basis of the program, has really been fully reevaluated, Grotrian said.

The plan being reevaluated, the Thrifty Food Plan, is one of four food plans created by the USDA and represents the cost of maintaining a nutritious, practical and cost-effective diet at home for a family of four, according to the USDA website.

Grotrian said that she believes the plan will be beneficial to those in the state that receive SNAP benefits because, for the first time since 1975, the actual costs of eating a healthy diet have been reevaluated.

SNAP is the best poverty program in existence to give poor families a helping hand, Sen. John McCollister of Omaha said.
