What Are Texas Emergency Allotment Benefits

Under the direction of Greg Abbott, the HHSC requested and received federal approval to release Emergency Allotment benefits to eligibleSNAP households this month.

SNAP recipients who have already received their monthly benefits will see the additional EA benefits automatically loaded to their Electronic Benefits Transfer card on the schedule listed below.

Future Emergency Allotment benefits will be determined at the federal level by the USDAon a month-to-month basis.

Emergency Allotment benefits are not intended to be permanent.

If the federal government discontinues EA benefits, Texas SNAP recipients will continue to receive their standardSNAP benefits.

This would mean a reduction in the amount of SNAP assistance received each month.

Standard SNAP benefits are calculated based on household size, income & expenses, and assets.

Addressing Food Insecurity In New York

The New York City’s Department of Social Services-Human Resources Administration received 152,244 more applications for SNAP benefits from March 2020 to December, a 55% increase over that period.

Ian Martin, the agency’s spokesman, said the volume of applications for SNAP is slightly above normal pre-pandemic rates and that “the total SNAP caseload in NYC has continued to rise, and today, there are approximately 16% more cases receiving SNAP benefits compared to February 2020.”

Darcie Miller, the commissioner of the Orange County Department of Social Services, said she warned that the lapse of enhanced benefits in September will hinder food security.

“We’re all prisoners of the economy,” she said. “Despite SNAP benefits and the support that households get from that, we acknowledge that there are people who still are food insecure.”

Unlike most counties in New York, Orange County saw a decrease in SNAP enrollment from before the pandemic to April 2021.

But county officials warned that just became SNAP benefits fell slightly, it doesn’t mean residents are not seeking government help.

Scott Imhof, the county’s social welfare examiner, said more county resources are being used to address food insecurity during the pandemic not just through food stamps.

What Are Snap Benefits And How Do They Work

40% Food Stamp Increase EXPLAINED! 52 States Get Emergency Maximum Food Stamps!

SNAP is administered by the USDA, and benefits are based on a theoretical grocery bill to feed a family of four an assortment of healthy but low-price foods. This theoretical calculation hasnt increased since 2006, and this months increase represents the largest since 1975.

The revised calculation also takes into account new dietary guidelines, resulting in an acknowledgment of the costs of more fish and red/orange vegetables, than has been used in the past. In announcing the increase in August, the USDA cited consistent evidence that previous benefit levels were too low to realistically feed people who rely on SNAP benefits, with one study showing nearly nine out of 10 recipients had reported the cost of healthy foods as a barrier to achieving a healthy diet.

SNAP benefit eligibility is determined by household size and income. While there are some unique factors that are considered in some cases, a family of four is eligible for benefits as long as their monthly gross income does not exceed $2,871 and their monthly net income does not exceed $2,209.
