Who Are The Major Produce Subscription Box Brands

The best known produce subscription services in the market right now are Farm Fresh to You and Imperfect Foods. Both offer weekly or every other week delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables delivered right to your door. Likewise both promise a selection of the seasons best harvest at any given time, pre-picked for those who are flexible and like being surprised, or with customizable options for box size and contents if you prefer more nimble control.

What Imperfect Produce Do They Have

The products available change a little each week, but I was really pleasantly surprised how many items they have available, especially for produceboth organic and conventional. In fact, I was able to get a few items I havent seen in my local grocery store . It seems the company even make some of their own products, like cookies or granola, with some of the extra baking ingredients they get.

There are a variety of meats and plant based items, but I havent personally purchased those. You can set up your subscription to automatically include dairy or a meat & fish pack if you wish. Meat, fish, dairy, or any other frozen or refrigerated items such as cut fruit or vegetables come packed in an insulated bag with a large ice pack that lasts a long time.

Theyve also recently begun offering saved stemsimperfect bouquets of flowers. Yes, please!

Giving Back Through Our Reduced

Since we recently received a grant from Krogers Zero Hunger Zero Waste Foundation to expand our reduced cost box program, we wanted to take some time to explain just how important this program has become to us as a company. Imperfect was founded to do one thing: make a better food system for everyone. So while saving good food from going to waste is central to that mission, so is making healthy food more accessible to the people who need it most.

Since day one, one of our guiding principles has been to increase food accessibility. Yet we knew from the start that not everyone could afford an Imperfect box. We also knew that we could do something about it.

At Imperfect, were proud to support initiatives that increase access to healthy food by donating thousands of pounds of produce every week to our food bank partners. Were also proud to offer a reduced-cost box program to SNAP recipients. This is an initiative we started after learning that online food retailers like us arent able to accept SNAP/EBT benefits because of antiquated USDA regulations.

Our reduced-cost box program lets folks get produce for an additional 33% less than our regular boxes and is around 50% less than the grocery store. And while we take a financial loss on these boxes, we do this because its the right thing to do. We believe that its important to make good food more accessible to all of our neighbors, regardless of income.

Your support makes these reduced-cost boxes possible. Thank you!

Who Would Imperfect Produce Benefit

Play as U GO: Use what you have

For those trying to trick themselves into eating and buying more fruits and vegetables, its a great service because when its in your house, you will reach for it.

In the grocery stores they have tons of other temptations to lead you away.

We dont have a car so hefty produce are a rarer treat.

Families without cars or living in a food desert would benefit from Imperfect Produce too.

Those on EBT/food stamp benefits or anyone looking to shave a dollar off their grocery bill can benefit from Imperfect Produce too. None of the products I received was old and very few of them had detectable imperfections.

But if you live near many stores with great produce selection then its probably not worth getting Imperfect Produce because it isnt much cheaper at all. Plus, you dont have exact control over the variation selection or shipping schedule.

What I Like & Dont Like About Imperfect Foods

No service is perfect. I have to nitpick here so I am going to even though Ive never had a shipping or delivery issue with them after 18-20 orders. Quality is stellar for imperfect the only thing I want everyone to stay away from is buying grapes. Every. single. time. Ive ordered grapes in my cart they have come half mashed and partially rotten. I know grapes are hard to pack so its probably damaged from transit but yeah.

I dont have this issue with lemons, apples, oranges, spinach, lettuce, even easily bruised avocados come just fine.

Another thing I dont like is simply waste. Imperfect Foods has become better about it though since 2 years ago. You can return the ice gel packs and bubble insulators back to Imperfect Foods if you wanted to. Their mission, which is to eliminate food waste and build a better food system for everyone, is being practiced.

Since they rebranded from Imperfect Produce to Imperfect Foods in general, Ive seen an increase in product selection. Now even carry their own brand of shower gels/shampoos/body butter etc. I did end up buying these haha you can see in my videos. Ive tried the Imperfect Foods Avocado & Honey body butter, pretty good! Its not $400 fancy Sephora HG cream but its not the cheapy Walgreens brand quality. It smells just like Bath & Body Works body butters I have and the scent is amazing!

Do Any Meal Delivery Services Accept Ebt

Meal kits are subscription food and grocery services that focus on sending pre-portioned and sometimes partially-prepared food ingredients and recipes to customers for home preparation. Thus, most meal kit food items are EBT eligible since they dont fall under hot, prepared meals. That is why it isnt easy to find fast food places that take food stamps.

Top Box Foods is currently the only meal delivery service that allows customers to order food online with EBT.

Unfortunately, popular meal delivery services like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh dont accept EBT. If you want to order food from either of them, youll need to use an alternative payment method like a debit card or credit card with a smart chip, mobile payment like Apple pay, Google Pay, PayPal, American Express gift cards, or retail gift cards.

Alternatively, you can get food delivery from grocery stores that accept EBT. Fresh Direct is among the grocery stores participating in the federal pilot program allowing customers to purchase groceries and other SNAP-eligible products online. Customers select the EBT option at checkout and then pay in person with their EBT card when their order is delivered.

The only downside is that Fresh Direct requires that EBT customers place a minimum order of $30, and they dont deliver nationwide. Their food delivery services are limited in six northwest states, including New Jersey, Washington DC, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.

Why Cant Online Grocers Accept Snap

What are Food Stamps? How do Food Stamps work?

Food waste may be one of the most obvious problems facing our food system, but theres an equally big problem hiding in nearly all of our biggest and most affluent cities: food deserts. A food desert, or food apartheid, as our friend Olympia Auset of SuprMarkt has dubbed the problem, is an area with no grocery stores nearby. In modern America theyre shockingly widespread, and one of the more glaring examples of how low-income Americans are systematically denied access to basic human rights like healthy food.

In theory, grocery delivery services can combat food deserts by democratizing access to healthy food. They effectively bring healthy food right to the people that need them instead of forcing people to travel long distances to get to certain grocery stores. However, since more than 6% of Americans dont have a bank, its undeniable that online grocers need to prioritize accessibility to avoid excluding low-income shoppers. Indeed, Philadelphia recently made headlines for banning cashless stores, arguing that they effectively discriminate against people who do not have access to a debit card and may depend on cash to pay for food.

Which brings us to the most important issue in this debate: the fact that SNAP recipients cannot currently use their SNAP benefits or EBT cards to pay for food online. This means that while companies like Imperfect have enormous potential to bring healthy food where its needed most, governmental red tape currently holds us back.

Supporting Farms Or Agribusiness

Ben Simon, the co-founder of Imperfect Produce, spoke about scale to the U.S. News & World Report, farmers we work with have to have enough volume for it to really make sense. We want to be able to source at least a truckload from these growers each week, so they have to be at least midsize in most cases. Imperfect Produce is only able to make a profit by working with the larger global agribusinesses, not the picturesque small and mid-sized farms they project in their marketing campaign. They donate the leftovers of their leftovers to non-profits and the very place that surplus produce wouldve gone to in the first place, food banks. The only thing the company has done is to fulfill their bottom line by creating another market for agribusiness systemic overproduction. Its a clever money making scheme, but it certainly doesnt help small, local farmers or address the source of waste: overproduction by industrial farms as they produce the perfect produce sold in supermarkets.

Questions You Might Have

Is there a delivery fee for Imperfect Foods?

Yes. There is a $4.99 delivery fee for each delivery, unless you order over a certain amount.

How do I check if they deliver to my area?

Go to their website, click on the “Sign Up” button. It’ll ask you for your zip code, and when you put it in they will tell you yes or no!

Do I have to be home to get the delivery?

Usually no. As long as it’s clear to the driver where to leave the box. There’s a place for “Driver Instructions” in the sign-up process. This is where I explain that we have an extremely long driveway and ask them to put the box on our porch.

What farms does Imperfect Foods source their food from?

I emailed them to ask this question and they said the farms they’re sourcing their food from differ each week, depending on where there’s excess produce they can use. But they mostly source food from medium to large farms. Their business model was designed this way . Their website says they source 78% of their produce from family farms or cooperatives, 13% is wholesale, 6% comes from grower representatives, and 3% comes from corporate farmers. If you want more transparency in where your meat is coming from, look into something like Crowd Cow.

When do they deliver? How do I know when my box will be delivered?

There is an automated text message when your box is getting close . And another text when the box has been delivered.

What Does A Box Of Organic Produce Typically Cost

For many, the biggest hurdle to healthier eating is price. Understandably, its where the rubber meets the road. The good news about farm subscription boxes like Imperfect Produce is that theyve grown to a large enough scale to be quite cost-competitive. Check out the chart below to help you compare prices side by side and determine if its something you can stomach:

As you review prices, keep in mind that its a bit like comparing apples to oranges! Farm Fresh to You only offers 100% certified organic produce. Their model promotes ecological and environmental farming practices despite the higher cost of going pesticide-free, which may explain their higher price tag.

Imperfect Foods offers the choice of both organic and conventional produce. Because their model is based repurposing food that might otherwise be wasted their product is purchased from farmers at a steep discount, which is great for consumers.

The real comparison is your happiness factor with the varieties of produce throughout the seasons, and how eagerly you embrace new and unusual foods that you find in your box. Getting a seasonal selection of produce isnt for everyone, but the only way to find out is to try. Im clearly an outspoken advocate, but several of my friends that Ive referred ultimately decided it wasnt right for their lifestyle. Others are hooked!
