Online grocery shopping will soon be a reality for a lot more families. Amazon, FreshDirect and other online grocers will now accept food stamps in a pilot program done in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The two-year program for families participating in SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, will start this summer. Families in parts of Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington will be eligible for different vendors.
Online purchasing is a potential lifeline for SNAP participants living in urban neighborhoods and rural communities where access to healthy food choices can be limited, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. Were looking forward to being able to bring the benefits of the online market to low-income Americans participating in SNAP.
Outside of government partnerships, Amazon has recently been experimenting with grocery shopping in a major way. The tech giants plan for grocery stores that would not employ cashiers and that would require a smartphone for entry brought up concerns about excluding low-income customers and contributing to inequality.
Online grocery services from the grocers Safeway, ShopRite, Hy-Vee, Harts Local Grocers and Dashs Market will also be included in the USDAs program. The USDA is trying to determine whether local grocers or national services like Amazon will work best for families using SNAP, the agency said in a press release.

The United States Department of Agriculture recently announced a pilot program that will allow recipients of SNAP benefits, formerly known as food stamps, to purchase groceries online. Seven retailers, including Amazon and FreshDirect, will be participating in the program.
Initially, the program will be limited to seven states, including New York. The scope of the pilot is narrow because each state has its own system for processing SNAP purchases, and participating states will have to change their current systems to accommodate online purchasing. If the pilot is successful, the USDA plans to expand the program to additional retailers and locations.
The purpose of the pilot
The stated purpose of the pilot program is to address the needs of the elderly and disabled, who often cannot easily go out to shop and to help those that lack consistent access to transportation or live in areas considered to be food deserts. The USDA defines a food desert as an area in which at least 33 percent of the population lives over a mile from a large grocery store.
Although the USDA has only officially declared two New York City neighborhoods food deserts, and both are in Staten Island, Dr. Charles Platkin, Executive Director of the New York City Food Policy Center, thinks there are more food deserts in the cityin the South Bronx and East Harlem, for example.

PORT MORRIS â FreshDirect agreed Friday to serve all parts of The Bronx and launch a pilot program allowing food stamp users to make online orders.
Critics slammed the city and stateâs decision earlier this year to award FreshDirect $130 million in subsidies to build a new headquarters in the South Bronx when the company only delivered to two well-off neighborhoods in the northern part of the borough and did not accept food stamps.
On Friday, the company said that beginning next week it will deliver to every Bronx zip code and that it had received the US Department of Agricultureâs approval to let a test group of Bronx food stamp recipients order groceries over the Internet.
Currently, online food retailers like FreshDirect cannot accept food stamps because the food stamp payment system, called Electronic Benefits Transfer, does not support online transactions.
We are âthrilled that we are now able to serve the entire Bronx and provide residents there with convenient access to quality, fresh foods,â said FreshDirect CEO Jason Ackerman.
The company added that the USDA just approved its food stamp pilot program last week and that it still needs to finalize some details, including which Bronx food stamp users will be included in the test group.
âThe cumulative effect of such facilities on air quality in the South Bronx, where we havean asthma epidemic, is staggering,â the councilmembers added.
