Food stamps boost

AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has announced the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is providing more than $305.5 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program food benefits for the month of August. The allotments are expected to help about 1.5 million Texas households.

“It is imperative that every family across our state has access to nutritious food,” said Governor Abbott in a news release. “Through the extension of emergency SNAP benefits and the work of HHSC, we are ensuring Texans have the resources they need to stay healthy.”

Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter adds, “Were proud to continue providing nourishment to families through healthy foods.”

Texas extending emergency SNAP benefits for month of July

The benefits are expected to help around 1.4 million households.

HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size, and all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments. This additional emergency allotment should appear in recipients accounts by Aug. 31.

The emergency August allotments are in addition to the more than $7.6 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020.

When Will I Receive My Child’s P

P-EBT benefits will begin being issued in April for the first semester and in July for the second semester . Children may receive benefits for one or both semesters based on their eligibility, however, children from some schools may receive all their benefits in July. This is because some schools may provide all their student information to HHS at once, rather than separately for each semester. Eligible students identified as homeless, foster care or migrant may receive their benefits starting in July.

If My Child’s School Provides Free Meals Is My Child Eligible For The National School Lunch Program

Receiving free meals at school does not mean a student is eligible for NSLP, and it does not automatically make a student eligible for P-EBT. Some Texas campuses have offered free meals to all students during the COVID-19 public health emergency. Receiving these free meals at school does not automatically make a student eligible for P-EBT. To be NSLP-certified, you must meet individual income eligibility requirements unless a child attends a Community Eligibility Provision or Provision 2 school. If you are uncertain about whether your child’s school is a CEP or P2 school, contact the school.

When Did The Extra Snap Benefits Start

As the pandemic started taking a hold of the world in March 2020, the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act was passed whereby the law authorized the use of emergency allotment supplemental benefits to households receiving SNAP.

States were then given permission to issue supplemental EA SNAP benefits to households not receiving the maximum benefit for the household’s size.

In April 2021, the United States Department of Agriculture changed the supplementation policy and authorized the payment of a supplement of at least 95 dollars to all households receiving SNAP benefits.

Some Americans Are Struggling Securing Food Stamp Benefits

Since March of 2020, households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits have been allotted extra emergency SNAP benefits due to the pandemic. This means households will receive extra benefits that bring them to the maximum amount for their household size or $95, whichever is higher.

Here is a helpful way to know if you are impacted:

    • My household already receives the maximum SNAP amount for our household size : You will get $95 a month in extra emergency SNAP payments.
    • My household does not get the maximum amount for our household size: You will get the maximum benefit amount for your household size or $95, whichever is higher.

For August 2022, the extra SNAP will come as a supplemental payment on or about August 3rd.

Who Is Eligible For The Extra Snap Benefits

All households receiving SNAP benefits are eligible to receive EA benefits provided the state that they live allows for the additional payments to be made.

This includes households that already receive the maximum SNAP benefit amount with respect to their household size, and households that are eligible for a monthly supplement of less than 95 dollars.

However, as the pandemic recedes, states have curtailed their EA allotments, although 13 states will continue to provide additional benefits till July 15, 2022.

My Child Received A Smaller P

For school year 20212022, P-EBT benefits are based on eligibility for the National School Lunch Program and the number of days a child did not receive free or reduced-price meals at school because of a COVID-related absence, virtual attendance, or school closures. This is different from P-EBT for previous school years when children all received the same benefit amount if they were NSLP-eligible. Biden Administration To Increase Food Aid

Revised nutrition standards for food stamps mean a big benefit bump.

The latest state to cut off the extra benefits was Georgia in June. In an email, a spokesperson for Republican Gov. Brian Kemp said Georgia residents dont need the additional help, citing a strong economy and a low unemployment rate.

If any Georgian or Georgia families are experiencing food insecurity, we have many other statewide programs to help support them, the statement said.

But food banks across Georgia say they have seen an increase in clients since the emergency benefits were cut off. Danah Craft, executive director of Feeding Georgia, a network of food banks across the state, said food banks are so overwhelmed they are no longer able to feed people with their usual donations, forcing them to buy food instead.

According to Feeding Georgia, the pandemic caused a sustained 30% spike in demand. After the state ended the extra aid, demand doubled at some food banks in the network, Craft said.

They’re doing everything they can think of, but purchasing food is not sustainable for the food bank network, she said.

Erin Barger, chief executive officer of the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, which covers 14 mostly rural counties, said the end of the emergency benefits has been a real challenge for people who already were struggling. She said on average, households reported getting about $89 extra per month in emergency benefits, but that inflation devoured a lot of the increase.
