While this is not an official Texas Health and Human Services tool, it can still be used to make the decision to apply for Texas food stamps or not. The process of applying for SNAP requires time and effort and this tool will provide you with insight to determine whether or not it is worth it to apply for benefits.

Texas Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides multiple benefits to needy families living in the state of Texas. The families will be able to pay for food, utilities and transportation using SNAP income benefits.

SNAP benefits are not just limited to families but single people can also receive these benefits if they meet financial criteria. SNAP beneficiaries will receive applications to re-apply for the program at the end of their benefit period. If adults are in training or employment program, they will have a longer benefit period. Adults working more than 20 hours a week will also enjoy longer benefit period.

To receive SNAP benefits, beneficiaries should be U.S nationals, qualified alien, or a permanent resident. Only people residing in Texas are able to avail Texas SNAP benefits. Residents of other states can apply through their state SNAP.

Applicants will have to meet financial criteria before they start receiving benefits through the program. Families with low bank balance and low monthly income will be eligible to receive benefits.

SNAP benefits are provided through Lone Star Card. You will have amount loaded to your card each month. Amount of aid you receive depends on your family income and household size. Currently, a four-person family has a maximum monthly allotment of $782.

Note: When determining transportation costs, the person may choose to use 56 cents per mile instead of keeping track of actual expenses.

Deductions are not allowed for the following medical expenses:

  • the costs of policies that do not specifically cover medical costs
  • food supplements that can be purchased with SNAP, such as Ensure and baby formula, even if prescribed by a physician
  • paid or past due expenses billed prior to the initial certification period
  • medical marijuana, even if prescribed by a physician or

Emergency Snap Benefits In Texas Extended For April 2022

AUSTIN, Texas – Emergency SNAP food benefits have been extended for April 2022.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will provide more than $318 million in emergency SNAP food benefits. The allotments are expected to help more than 1.5 million Texas households, according to a press release.

This additional emergency allotment should appear in recipients accounts by April 30.

“We continue to do our best to support Texans who need a helping hand,” said Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter. “These benefits assist families throughout the state to provide nutritious meals to their loved ones.”

HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size, and all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments.

The emergency April allotments are in addition to the more than $6.4 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020.

Administered by HHSC, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to eligible low-income families and individuals in Texas. Texans in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, online or use the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage their benefits.___

Special Rules For Elderly Or Disabled

There are several exceptions and exemptions to the SNAP eligibility requirements if a household member is elderly or disabled.

Who is elderly?

In SNAP, you are elderly if you are 60 years or older.

Who is disabled?

In SNAP, you are disabled if you meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • You receive Federal disability or blindness payments under the Social Security Act, including Supplemental Security Income or Social Security disability or blindness payments. OR
  • You receive State disability or blindness payments based on SSI rules. OR
  • You receive a disability retirement benefit from a governmental agency because of a permanent disability. OR
  • You receive an annuity under the Railroad Retirement Act and are eligible for Medicare or are considered disabled under SSI. OR
  • You are a veteran who is totally disabled, permanently homebound, or in need of regular aid and attendance. OR
  • You are the surviving spouse or child of a veteran who is receiving VA benefits and is considered permanently disabled.

There are several exceptions and exemptions to the SNAP procedures if a household member is elderly or disabled.

A person is considered elderly for SNAP purposes if they are 60 years or older.
