What To Buy With Snap
The purpose of SNAP is to provide low-income households with the money they need to feed their family. While there are a few prohibited items under SNAP, you can also purchase plenty of food items.
You may purchase most staple foods with SNAP, including all fruits and vegetables and meat, poultry, and fish. Dairy products like milk and cheese are also eligible.
In addition to fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy, you may also purchase most types of bread and cereals. You can also purchase snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages like fruit juice or tea and coffee.
One excellent benefit of SNAP is that you may purchase a variety of seeds and plants. If youre planning to grow a garden, this is a wonderful way to grow food in your own backyard to feed your family.
The USDA has a helpful website where you can find a variety of recipes and much more. This site shows you how to cook delicious meals with foods you can purchase using your SNAP benefits. The National Institutes of Health also offers a free PDF cookbook featuring lots of delicious, healthy recipes to try.

Additional Disaster Snap Benefits Approved For Ky Counties Following Historic Tornadoes
FRANKFORT, Ky. Gov. Beshear announced Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits have been approved for Kentuckians who live or work in the 14 counties impacted by the Dec. 10-11 tornadoes.
Two counties are currently on standby as they wait on being added in the future.
We really appreciate the extra assistance from the federal government to ensure our Kentucky families who have lost so much are able to have access to healthy food at this time, Beshear said. When youre worried about how to rebuild your home and your life, you shouldnt have the extra burden of worrying about your next meal.
Monday, Beshear made an announcement that SNAP beneficiaries affected by the tornadoes can request benefit replacements through a waiver the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved. A second waiver provides replacements to counties hit hardest like Warren and Hickman counties.
Additionally, Beshear announced hot food can be purchased from authorized SNAP retailers.
D-SNAP gives assistance to low-income households with food loss, loss of income, or natural disaster damage like tornadoes. Approved D-SNAP beneficiaries will receive an Electronic Benefit card that can be used just like a debit card to buy food at most grocery stores.
Due to unique, dire circumstances, those that may not qualify for SNAP benefits may still qualify for D-SNAP benefits.

Find Out About Snap Benefits In Kentucky
If you are approved for food stamp benefits in Kentucky, you will receive an electronic benefit transfer card that looks and works like a debit card. You must activate your EBT card, choose a PIN number and sign the back of the card before it can be used.
Each month, your SNAP benefits will be loaded onto this card. You may use these funds to buy eligible food items at grocery stores, farmers markets and other places that sell food.
SNAP food benefits can be used to purchase most types of food, but there are some exceptions. For example, you cannot buy alcohol, tobacco, household products, pet food, hot food items or meals that are meant to be eaten in the store. Items that you are allowed to buy generally fall into these categories:
- Meat, fish and poultry
- Fruits and veggies
- Seed and plants that you will grow at home
It is important to keep in mind that SNAP benefits are only provided for a certain period of time. Then, you must recertify your eligibility in order to keep participating in the program. When your benefit period ends, you will need to undergo another interview process to verify your continued eligibility.
Kentucky Food Stamps Requirements
There are four basic food stamps requirements in Kentucky that claimants must meet in order to collect SNAP benefits. These prerequisites are as follows:
- Citizenship SNAP petitioners must be either U.S. citizens or possess legal residency in the United States.
- Employment Most claimants who are not working and who are between the ages of 18 and 59 years of age must be registering for work or looking for work. Likewise, the requirements for food stamps also indicate that petitioners must accept employment opportunities if they are offered to them.
- Assets Households must have collective resources that are less than $2,000. On the other hand, families with members who are at least 60 years old may have assets that are no greater than $3,250.
- Earnings Food stamps eligibility requirements indicate that petitioners must earn less than the maximum income totals that the state allows. These maximums are established in proportion to the number of individuals who live in a household.
