How Much Will I Get

Just as your eligibility is based on your income, the amount of benefits you receive each month will depend on your household size. Once you are eligible, the amount, called an allotment, is determined by how many people you are supporting, not your income. The more people in your household, the more benefits youll receive.

To determine your allotment, multiple your total net monthly income by 0.3. This is because SNAP households are expected to spend around 30% of their income on food. Once you calculate this amount, it is subtracted from the maximum amount for that family size.

The College Student Hunger Act Of 2019

Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Al Lawson introduced The College Student Hunger Act of 2019 on July 17, 2019, in an attempt to extend SNAP benefits for college students in need. The idea was to include both Pell Grant-eligible students and independent students. Warren and Lawson both believe that students have a right to both food and education, and the goal was to alleviate financial tension. This bill has been endorsed by several organizations including Bread for the World. Specifically, the Act would allow Pell-Grant eligible and independent students to qualify for benefits, lowers the 20 hours/week work requirement to 10 hours/week, and requires the Department of Education to notify Pell Grant eligible students of their SNAP eligibility. The student hunger pilot program will test different ways students can use SNAP benefits such as directly at the dining hall or indirectly to help pay for student meal plans.

Renaming The Food Stamp Program

The 2008 farm bill renamed the Food Stamp Program to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and replaced all references to âstampâ or âcouponâ in federal law with âcardâ or âEBT.â This was done to mark a more explicit focus on providing nutrition. It was also done to reduce usage of the stigmatized phrase âfood stampsâ.

To calculate your net monthly income, you must deduct approved household expenses. Here are the expenses that can be deducted from your households gross income:

• 20% deduction from earned income.
• A standard deduction of $177 for households with 1 to 2 people and $246 for households with 6 or more people. See the standard deduction for 2021 in the chart below.
• Dependent care deduction when needed for work, training, or education.
• A deduction for elderly or disabled members medical expenses that exceed $35 a month .
• Deduct any legally owed child support payments.
• Homeless Households shelter costs deduction of $159.73.
• A deduction for excess shelter costs that exceed more than half of the households income . This deduction cannot exceed $597 unless one of your household members is elderly or disabled. Allowable excess shelter costs include:
• Mortgage or rent payments
• Household utilities including electricity, water, fuel for heat, and a basic phone line

I Am A Student Can I Get Georgia Food Stamps

Most able-bodied students ages 18 through 49 who are enrolled in college or other institutions of higher education at least half time are not eligible for SNAP benefits.

However, students may be able to get SNAP benefits if otherwise eligible and they:

• Get public assistance benefits under a Title IV-A program
• Take part in a state or federally financed work-study program
• Work at least 20 hours a week
• Are taking care of a dependent household member under the age of 6

Also, a single parent enrolled full time in college and taking care of a dependent household member under the age of 12 can get SNAP benefits if otherwise eligible.
