Walmart Looks To Expand Pickup Payment For Snap Customers

Walmart aims to bring more flexible payment to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program customers participating in the SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot.

On Tuesday, the retail giant also announced a special pickup hour at selected locations for older shoppers and those at a higher risk for coronavirus, as well as for emergency personnel.

The SNAP pilot enables food stamps recipients in certain states to shop and pay for groceries online using their electronic benefits transfer cards. Last June, Walmart launched a pay at pickup option that let families using SNAP benefits pay when they use the retailers grocery pickup service in the 3,300 stores where its available. Via that feature, customer provide their EBT card for payment when an associate brings the online order to the car.

We knew it was a big step forward then, but today we know it means even more, Tom Ward, senior vice president of customer product at Walmart, said in a blog post yesterday. Customers are relying on us to help get food on their tables, and they are relying on us to keep them safe. Pickup is playing a bigger role than ever in helping us do just that.

Set up a Walmart pickup account. Log in to your account if you already have one. To add your EBT card to your Walmart account, click on Payment Methods and follow the prompts.

Select Save Card after entering your card information. Once saved, your EBT card cannot be used for all items eligible for SNAP under USDA guidelines.

Why Are Some Food Items Not Eligible For Delivery Using Ebt

Purchasing food using SNAP benefits and an EBT card has some limitations involved.

As mentioned earlier, you cannot purchase alcohol, tobacco products, vitamins or supplements, over-the-counter medicine, and prepared or hot foods.

Some foods or items are not available, as well as some delivery services. This comes down to the state and company. In most cases, some delivery services are not available because on top of offering groceries, they also deliver alcohol and prepared meals. These items are not approved for purchase with an EBT.

The only superstore which has the authority to accept SNAP EBT card payments for the delivery of food shopping is Walmart. Such orders can be placed on Walmartâs official website or via the Walmart app.

EBT online payments are accepted in all but two US states, with those in Alaska and Montana able to pay for groceries using their EBT card at pickup.

Target

Target has announced this year that it plans to accept SNAP EBT payments for groceries although a specific date hasnât been set.
