The Killeen branch of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission which provides food stamps, Medicaid for children and other benefits plans to move to a larger location in south Killeen to accommodate the office’s growing needs.

The 10-year lease the commission has signed for 400 Stefek Drive in Killeen will increase the local office space, officials said. The new location is under construction, and once it is ready for move-in, the office will move from the current location at 315 E. Ave. D. in downtown Killeen.

After 20 years at the current location, the projected date for their move is August of 2020, according to Christine Mann, press officer for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

We are moving to a new location because the current building no longer meets the needs of the agency, Mann said. The lobby is not conducive to the new self-service module for clients. In addition, there was limited parking for clients and staff.

The open standard concept of the new building will better suit the agencys needs, Mann said.

Area Families May Apply Now For School Food Aid Program

KILLEEN, Texas – Families can now apply to receive food aid through the Pandemic EBT program.

The program reimburses families for the times during the last school year in which their kids would have received free or reduced lunch at school but ultimately did not because the kids were learning virtually or school was closed.

Normally, millions of kids get free meals at school and, when schools were closed and they no longer had access, Congress created P-EBT to give parents the cash value of those meals, Rachel Cooper, a senior policy analyst at Every Texan, told KWTX.

She said that families stand to receive nearly $7 for each day schools were closed or students learned remotely a one-time benefit of more than $1,000 for many families.

The program previously paid out a one-time benefit of $285 last summer.

Families who were already enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program automatically received their aid at the end of May.

However, those not in SNAP have to apply separately.

Data from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission show that, in April, less than half of those in Bell County who were eligible for some form of SNAP assistance actually received it.

In McLennan County, less than a third of eligible recipients received the benefit.

The extra application step has advocates worried that some families could slip through the cracks.

Most schools should have forwarded the application for the program to families earlier this week.

Police seek publics help in search for man who robbed ...

When you qualify for SNAP, you will be receiving benefits through Lone Star Card. This is a standard plastic card, as in the case of debit cards. The card is used just like a debit card. You will have the money in your account on due date and you can purchase food items with it, using it like a debit card.

The United States Department of Agriculture provides SNAP benefits. USDA will load your card with your monthly amount of SNAP benefits, each month. You can use this money on stores where regular debit card works.

If you qualify and receive a Lone Star Card, it is your responsibility to use it with care. No one else can use your card since it is illegal to allow someone else to use your benefits. If you are in a situation where you’ll need someone else to use your card for you, you will have to ask for a second card. You can then give the second card to someone you trust. The money spent from that card will be deducted from your primary card.

In order to start using your Lone Star Card, you will have to sign at the back of your card after you receive it. You will also need to register it in order to use it. You can call 1 800 777 7328 to register your card. You will then choose a PIN for your card.

If you opt to pick up your card at HHSC benefits office instead of getting it in mail, you won’t have to register it. When you are handed over the card at the office, it is registered at spot.
