Meal kit services like Blue Apron and HelloFresh have seemingly inspired the U.S. Department of Agricultures plans to change the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, reports Business Insider. According to President Trumps fiscal year 2019 budget proposal, households receiving $90 or more per month in SNAP benefits will receive a portion of their benefits in the form of a USDA Foods package called the USDA Americas Harvest Box.

The box would include items such as shelf-stable milk, vegetables, meat, poultry, or fish. The program would send the boxes to 16.4 million households, or 81 percent of SNAP households, and would account for half of the benefits for the household. The remainder would be put on an Electronic Benefit Transfer card.

According to USDA, states would be allowed to determine the method of delivery. The program is expected to save $129.2 billion from the SNAP program compared to the current baseline over the next 10 years, according to the report. Full Story
