How to Apply for Food Stamps in Las Vegas, Nevada

Washington, DC, August 14, 2020

With the Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services anticipating 20,000 new food stamps applications at the end of the month as more generous federal unemployment assistance expires, federal officials have extended waivers through the end of August that allow for more streamlined application and renewal processes.

Applying for food stamps, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, in Nevada typically requires an in-person interview where an individual must sign an application. The waivers from the United States Department of Agriculture allow interviews to take place over the phone, documents to be signed electronically and benefits to be automatically renewed at a six-month expiration date.

The waivers have been in place in the state since March but were set to expire at the end of July.

We are very happy that the USDA changed its mind because anytime the economy is hit hard, its hit even harder in Nevada, because people have to have some money in their pocket to go on holiday, to feel like they can fly and travel safely, Rep. Dina Titus said. We have so many people employed in the hospitality, travel, and tourism ancillary businesses that it can take us longer to recover, so this is really important that we got this.

Titus and Piccinini said they were unclear why the first waiver request in June was denied.

Nevada Experiences Surge In First

LAS VEGAS The coronavirus pandemic has led to massive unemployment. The unemployment rate in Las Vegas for the month of June was 18% and many families are in need of help to put food on the table.

That need has led to an increase in the number of new applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP benefits. As a result, the agency that deals with the federal SNAP program has had to make some changes to keep up with the demand.

The number of first-time applications for food stamps is in the thousands. In January, before the COVID-19 crisis, the state says it received almost 15,000 new applications for SNAP benefits and 33% of those were first-time applicants. In April, during the pandemic, of the 20,000 new applicants that filed, 60% were first-time applicants.

Nearly 500,000 people in Nevada depend on SNAP benefits for food and the state is bracing for another surge in applications as more layoffs loom.

Our work requirements have been waived. So, typically, if you are receiving SNAP benefits and youre also an able-bodied adult without dependents, we do have some work requirements that go along with receiving benefits. However those work requirements have been waived, said Julie Balderson, spokesperson, Nevada Department of Health and Human Services.

Another change is that some retailers in Nevada including Walmart and Amazon can now accept SNAP benefits for online orders.

Not all food and drink items are covered by the program.
