Most families and individuals who meet the programs income guidelines are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program . The size of a familys SNAP benefit is based on its income and certain expenses. This paper provides a short summary of SNAP eligibility and benefit calculation rules that are in effect for federal fiscal year 2022, which began in October 2021.
How to Find Out if You Can Get Help From SNAP
If you would like help from SNAP, contact your local human services office. The staff there will work with you to find out if you qualify.
Notes: SNAP is often referred to by its former name, the Food Stamp Program. Your state may use a different name.

Temporary Assistance For Needy Families Pandemic Emergency Assistance Funds
The Department of Economic Security will be paying limited additional benefits to families who are eligible to receive TANF Cash Assistance , TANF Two-Parent Employment Program , or Grant Diversion payments. Funding for the additional benefits was authorized under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The additional benefit will be paid to eligible families for October, November and December 2021.
For families receiving TANF CA or TPEP CA, the maximum payment is $110 per month for each eligible child. Eligible families may receive up to three months of payments.Families receiving GD will receive a maximum payment of $330 for each eligible child. This will be a one-time only payment. Families who are eligible to receive the additional benefit will receive a notice informing them of the additional amount they will receive.
The additional benefit will be available on the regular Electronic Benefit Transfer card, issued separately from regular benefit payments.

Recent Changes To Snap Benefits And Eligibility
Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have temporarily modified SNAP eligibility and benefits in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes that remain in effect as of October 2021 are described below.
Separately, in August 2021 USDA announced a revision of the Thrifty Food Plan, which raised SNAP benefit levels beginning in October 2021 .
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides monthly benefits that help eligible low-income households buy the food they need for good health. For most households, SNAP funds account for only a portion of their food budgets they must also use their own funds to buy enough food to last throughout the month. Eligible households can receive food assistance through regular SNAP or through the Louisiana Combined Application Project .

SNAP participants may also meet the income eligibility guidelines for nutrition services through the Women, Infants & Children Program offered by the Louisiana Department of Health.

Qualifying for Regular SNAP
To get benefits through regular SNAP, households must meet certain tests, including resource and income tests.
Households are not exempt from the resource limit if:
- Any member is disqualified for Intentional Program Violation, or
- The household is disqualified for failing to comply with work registration requirements.
The following individuals are not exempt from the resource limit:
- An ineligible alien,
- An ineligible student,
- An individual who is disqualified for failure to comply with work registration requirements,
- An individual who is disqualified for failure to provide or apply for a social security number, and
- An individual who is on strike.

Food Stamps For The Elderly & Disabled
It has been mentioned in the above eligibility requirements that households containing an elderly or disabled individual are held to different requirements. This includes increased limits for both income and resources. In order to fall under the special eligibility requirements, the following definitions are used.
Elderly:
- Someone that is 60 years old or older.
Disabled:
- Receives benefits through SSI, social security disability, or blindness payments.
- Receives disability or blindness payments through a state program that follows the rules of SSI.
- Receives disability retirement benefits through a government agency due to a disability that is deemed permanent according to the Social Security Act.
