Proof Of Living Expenses
You need proof of living expenses such as how much you pay for rent and utilities. You must present documents like a copy of your lease or a letter from your landlord, a copy of a recent electric bill and a copy of a recent gas bill. Ask the staff at the food stamps office if you should bring proof of any other expenses.
Information Needed For Eligibility
Whether you are applying for the first time, or renewing your benefits, you may need one or more of the following pieces of information to determine whether you are eligible:
- Proof of citizenship and identity for everyone who is applying for benefits.
- Alien Registration Cards, if there are non-U.S. citizens applying for benefits in your household.
- Social Security numbers for everyone, or proof that a Social Security number has been applied for.
- Proof of relationship, birth certificates may be used
- Name, address & daytime phone number of landlord or neighbor.
- A statement verifying your address and the names of everyone living with you. The statement must be made by a non-relative who doesnt live with you. It must be signed, dated and include that persons address and telephone number.
- Proof of ALL money your household received from any source last month and this month.
- Proof that your employment ended and last date paid.
- Bank or credit union complete statement for the most recent month.
- Proof of savings bonds, securities, retirement plans and life insurance.
- Proof of rent/mortgage and utility bills for the most recent month.
- Proof of child care expenses for the most recent month.
- Proof of all medical expenses for those applying for benefits who are age 60 or older or receive disability benefits.

Extra Rules For Workers Without Kids
If youre age 18-49, able to work and dont have any kids, you may need to meet both the general work requirements and an additional work requirement for ABAWDS, which stands for able bodied adult without dependents.
This is in order to get food stamps for more than three months in three years, which is the time limit.
You can meet the ABAWD work requirement by doing any of the below things:
- Work at least 80 hours a month. Work can be for pay, for goods or services , unpaid, or as a volunteer
- Participate in a work program at least 80 hours a month. A work program could be SNAP Employment and Training or another federal, state, or local work program
- Participate in a combination of work and work program hours for a total of at least 80 hours a month
- Participate in workfare for the number of hours assigned to you each month
Similar to above, there are exceptions to the ABAWD work requirement and time limit.
This applies to you if youre any of the below things:
- Unable to work due to a physical or mental limitation
- Pregnant
- Have someone under 18 in your household
- Excused from the general work requirements
If you have to meet the ABAWD work requirement but you dont, you will lose your benefits after three months.
To get food stamps again, you must meet the ABAWD work requirement for a 30-day period or become excused.
Otherwise, you need to wait until the end of your three-year period, when youll get another three months under the time limit.
How To Apply For Snap Benefits
Depending on your states specific process, there are usually several different ways to apply for SNAP benefits for example, many states use online portals that allow you to submit your application and supporting documents all in one convenient spot. You can also apply for assistance over the phone or in person at your local SNAP office.

Receiving Your Snap Benefits: Lone Star Card
When you qualify for SNAP, you will be receiving benefits through Lone Star Card. This is a standard plastic card, as in the case of debit cards. The card is used just like a debit card. You will have the money in your account on due date and you can purchase food items with it, using it like a debit card.
The United States Department of Agriculture provides SNAP benefits. USDA will load your card with your monthly amount of SNAP benefits, each month. You can use this money on stores where regular debit card works.
If you qualify and receive a Lone Star Card, it is your responsibility to use it with care. No one else can use your card since it is illegal to allow someone else to use your benefits. If you are in a situation where you’ll need someone else to use your card for you, you will have to ask for a second card. You can then give the second card to someone you trust. The money spent from that card will be deducted from your primary card.
In order to start using your Lone Star Card, you will have to sign at the back of your card after you receive it. You will also need to register it in order to use it. You can call 1 800 777 7328 to register your card. You will then choose a PIN for your card.
If you opt to pick up your card at HHSC benefits office instead of getting it in mail, you won’t have to register it. When you are handed over the card at the office, it is registered at spot.
