• A veteran who is disabled, homebound, or in need of consistent aid.
• The surviving spouse or child of a veteran who is considered permanently disabled and receiving VA benefits.

What Is The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The SNAP program is a federal program to help low-income households maintain proper nutrition by giving them a means to purchase food. Most SNAP households now receive Electronic Benefits Transfer cards. These cards are also known as Oregon Trail cards. These cards work like ATM or bankcards. You will be given a PIN to access the funds in your food stamp account.

Oregon Snap Benefits Verification Of Information Rules Approval

The DHS Office has to interview you and verify the provided information before determining if the household is eligible for Food Stamp Benefits.

Oregon Department of Human Services lists examples of information that may need to be provided/proved at the interview:

• Your identification
• Social Security numbers for everyone in your household who wants benefits and

Under the simplified reporting option, households are required to report changes in income between certification and scheduled reporting periods.

The law limits the SNAP benefits to 3 months in a 3-year period for all able-bodied adults between the ages of 18-49 without dependents, who are not working or participating in a work program for at least 20 hours each week.

The main goal of the work requirement is to help the food stamp recipients get jobs, reduce or eliminate their dependency on the government benefits.

Maximum Monthly Amounts On Food Stamps

There is a maximum monthly allotment based on the size of the household. When determining your benefit allotment, they will take your net monthly income and multiply it by 30%. That number will then be subtracted from the maximum monthly allotment. The remaining amount is the total monthly allotment you will receive based on your application. This amount may change if your income or household size changes.

SNAP benefits are a specific money amount provided to recipients each month to go towards nutritional foods. Recipients are provided with an electronic benefits transfer card, and money is added to the card each month. You can check your balance by phone, and any unused funds at the end of the month remain on the card to be used to following month. Once allocated, benefits will not expire.

Benefits can be used to buy food and drinks at most grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations, pharmacies that sell food, and farmers markets. Benefits cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, medicine, hot food, food meant to be eaten in the store, or any non-food items.

In order to accept SNAP benefits, your market must apply to the Food and Nutrition Service to become an authorized SNAP retailer, which will assign your market a unique FNS number. The market also needs to have a point-of-sale machine, a bank account, and determine a method of transaction for SNAP sales.

What Changes Do I Have To Report To Dhs

Some changes must be reported when they happen. Other changes must be reported in the 6th month of your SNAP grant when you file your Interim Change Report. The changes that you must report depend on the reporting system you are in. You should ask your worker about your reporting requirements and make sure you understand them.

Most people are in the Simplified Reporting System and must only report a change in income that brings you over the income limit for the SNAP program. That must be reported by the 10th day after the month that your income goes up.

But, there are some changes that you should report because it will help you to get more benefits. Your SNAP benefits are based on your income and certain expenses, so if your income goes down, or your countable expenses go up, you can get more SNAP benefits. The countable expenses that you should report are an increase in your housing expenses, or you start paying child support, or you have child care expenses. Of course, you should always tell DHS when you move so that DHS has a good address for you.
