How Do I Go About Getting Snap
If you want to find out if you may be eligible to receive SNAP, visit myBenefits.ny.gov and click on Am I Eligible? to use the SNAP pre-screening eligibility tool. Please note: This pre-screening tool is not an application for SNAP.
In order to apply for SNAP, you need to file an electronic or paper application with your local county Department of Social Services, or, if you live in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with your local SNAP Center.
If you decide to submit a paper application, the SNAP office must give you an application form on the same day you ask for one. The office also must accept and register your application on the same day you turn it in.
You may submit, and the SNAP office must accept, your application as long as you have filled in your name, address and telephone number and signed the application. However, you should try to provide as much information as you can. Whatever information you cannot provide, a SNAP worker can help you complete at your eligibility interview.
You may have a complete eligibility interview done on the same day you file your application, or you may be asked to come back another day for a complete interview. If you qualify for SNAP, you must get them no later than 30 days from the date the office got your application.

How To Apply For Food Assistance Benefits In Florida
In Florida, there is one statewide application for Food Assistance, Temporary Cash Assistance, Medicaid and Refugee Assistance benefits. Although each of these programs has its own specific eligibility rules, anyone who is interested in one or more of the listed assistance programs can apply using the same application.
Florida residents in need of food assistance benefits can apply here, get the application online, or go in one of the local DCF Service Centers. The applicant needs to fill out all required information on the application. Providing a complete application will result most likely in a quicker eligibility determination. The application must have at least name, address and signature of the applicant to be accepted by the DCF Office. All required information can be provided later at the interview.
Before a decision is made a DCF worker has to review all submitted information and decide if the applicant needs to be interviewed. If an interview is needed it is usually scheduled within 5 days of the date the application is submitted. During the interview, the DCF worker will ask questions relevant to the application and verify submitted information. If the applicant is eligible, they will receive a notice stating how much food assistance benefits and for how long is the applicant eligible. Call DCF Customer Call Center at 762-2237 if you have questions about the Food Assistance Benefits and the application process.

If You Receive Snap Overpayments
There are three different kinds of SNAP overpayments:
If DCF claims that your household received more food stamps than you should have been given but you believe that you were not overpaid, you have the right to appeal the decision within ninety days.
If you were overpaid benefits, you are still obligated to pay back DCF for the amount of overpayment even if the overpayment was DCFs error. An accidental overpayment does not benefit your household, because it must always be paid back. If you have noticed an overpayment in your SNAP benefits that you believe to be DCFs error, notify them immediately. It cannot benefit you in the long run.
If you do not appeal or if you agree with the overpayment, DCF can do several things to collect the amount that you owe:
- If you are getting SNAP benefits now, DCF will lower your monthly benefits. The amount they will take depends on the type of overpayment you have.
- If you are not getting SNAP benefits, DCF will try to get you to agree to a repayment plan. If you do not agree, they can take your federal tax refund. In some situations, they can also take part of other benefits you get, like Social Security.
