Ida Disaster Food Stamp Application Extended In Louisiana
BATON ROUGE, La. Inundated by calls from people struggling to buy groceries after Hurricane Ida, Louisianas social services agency received federal approval to stretch out the application period for disaster food stamps by three additional days to work through the backlog.
The state Department of Children and Family Services said Thursday that the application period will run through Oct. 13, under the approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Disaster food stamps for low- to moderate-income households that dont currently receive the assistance were approved for 25 southeastern Louisiana parishes with damage from Ida, a Category 4 storm that struck Aug. 29.
I know that weve been overwhelmed with calls, said agency Secretary Marketa Garner Walters. She added: People are hungry, and this has been a big disaster.
More than 109,000 disaster food stamp requests have been processed so far, with about 81,000 approved, according to the department.

Louisiana Adds Three Extra Days For To Apply For Disaster Food Stamps After Hurricane Ida
Louisiana will extend the application process for disaster food stamps by three days to handle the large volume of people seeking the aid after Hurricane Ida.
The extension period will run Oct. 11-13, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services said today.
In the first phase of operations for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the agency answered over 100,000 calls and processed more than 73,000 applications. Higher than anticipated call volumes jammed phone lines. At times, the DSNAP line received as many as 350 calls per second.
The agency responded by offering extended hours and a virtual hold in an effort to serve more callers and be mindful of those with limited phone minutes. The DSNAP extension, approved by the federal government today, is an attempt to serve those who were still unable to apply during their assigned week, officials said.
Residents from Phase 1 parishes must wait until October 11-13 to apply and interview, and should not call during Phases 2 or 3 as they will not be able to be served during those weeks. The same applies to residents in Phase 2 if they miss their week to apply, they must wait until the extension period to complete their DSNAP application.
During the extension, residents of those parishes who have not yet applied for DSNAP may call on the following days according to the following alphabet schedule:

Louisiana’s Food Stamp Benefits Are Increasing By About 23%
BATON ROUGE, La. – About 18% of the states population will be seeing a dramatic increase in the amounts of groceries regular food stamps can buy.
The increase doesnt apply to the 80,000 and counting families who suffered significant damage from Hurricane Ida and were granted access to food stamps through Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, even though they made more money than households receiving regular food stamps. Temporary changes to federal rules allowed storm-related expenses incurred between Aug. 26 and Sept. 24 to be included in the calculation for income levels that qualify who can receive the benefit.
This change is long term and for those receiving regular SNAP.
The monthly increase for regular food recipients who cant apply for D-SNAP is part of a reevaluation the U.S. Department of Agriculture of the federal Thrifty Food Plan, which is used to set the amount of food assistance available. The amounts were increased to reflect the cost of food more accurately, particularly fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Maximum benefits for a family of four, for instance, will increase 23%, or $155, from $680 to $835 or around $12 to $20 per person
To qualify for regular food stamps, very generally, a family of fours combined annual gross income must be $34,452 or less. Plus, when rent and utilities, child support and other allowable expenses are deducted, the net income can be no more than $26,508 per year.

Louisiana Food Stamps Eligibility
To be eligible for the Louisiana Food Stamps, there are strict eligibility requirements that must be met. This includes resource and income requirements.
While a lot of households may be exempted from the resource requirements, there is no escaping the income requirements for most households. We therefore want to make sure you review the income guidelines and do your own review before you apply.

Prospective petitioners who are curious about how to apply for food stamps in Louisiana must know that there are several important steps they must complete throughout this process. First, claimants are responsible for filing applications with the DCFS.
Candidates have the option to access an online food stamps application and fill out all of their information digitally. Petitioners may also download applications from the states website, print them out and fill out the information on paper. Then, these candidates are responsible for delivering these documents to their representatives. Claimants also may obtain these forms from approved local community offices. What Happens After You Apply For Snap
It can take up to 30 days for the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services to process your SNAP application. After you apply, a caseworker will be assigned to you. Your caseworker will call you to conduct an interview over the phone to determine your SNAP eligibility.
Once a decision has been made, you will receive a notice in the mail from the Department of Children and Family Services with your determination and benefit amount. If you are approved, you will then receive your EBT card in the mail the day after your application is accepted.

About Emergency Snap Benefits
A disaster can trigger issuance of a few different kinds of “emergency” SNAP benefits. Those are:
