DENVER As Coloradans continue to navigate life during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Colorado Department of Human Services wants to remind residents of grocery options available to families participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that allows the use of Electronic Benefits Transfer cards to make safe, contactless purchases online.
Starting in May, the USDA Food and Nutrition Services enabled CDHS to launch a program that allows SNAP recipients to purchase grocery and food delivery online through approved retailers, Amazon and Walmart. In addition, contactless curbside grocery pick-up purchases made with EBT cards were made available at King Soopers across the state.
We are very happy to announce that now, Safeway and Albertsons have launched SNAP EBT for online grocery curb-side pick up through their Drive Up and Go service at select stores.
As Colorado continues to battle the COVID-19 crisis, safe access to food is more important than ever, Food and Energy Assistance Director Karla Maraccini said. These resources help individuals and families access the nutritious food they need to survive while lessening the risk of exposure to COVID.

The United States Department of Agriculture, the federal agency that oversees the foods stamps program started the Online Purchasing Pilot in January 2017 with select retailers for the initial launch of the EBT Online Purchasing Pilot.
In an update in March 2020, the USDA expects all approved merchants to have their program up and running in 2020. Which means that in all likelihood, EBT cardholders in states with approved merchants will be able to use their food stamps to purchase food online in 2020.

Slots for a Safeway or Albertsons pickup are much easier to get than delivery times. I find there are often same-day windows available, although its reasonable to expect you may have to wait until the next day if the store is busy or you place your order in the afternoon. Each window is one-hour long, allowing for flexibility for both the store and you.
Keep in mind that orders are final. You cant modify your order through Safeway or Albertsons Delivery & Pickup apps at all after you place it. If you need to remove something from your order, call your Vons store and their employees will make sure the items not included.

Its common especially now for certain grocery store items to be out of stock of certain items. If youre not super picky about having a particular brand of something, make sure to uncheck the No substitution if unavailable box.
Whats nice about the substitution feature in the Albertsons and Safeway apps is that its per item, rather than the order as a whole. I know that there are certain brands and items Im partial to and like that I have the option to select no substitution just for those items while leaving the rest of my cart open to other subs.
If the store is out of an item, you wont be charged for it. But keep in mind that you will be charged for your replacements, and in some cases the new item might be more expensive.
