Contra Costa County Food Stamps Income Limits

How Much In Calfresh Will I Get

Change In Food Stamp Allocation Rules Could Impact CalFresh Program

If you are approved for food stamps in California, how much in benefits you get partly depends on the:

  • Number of people in your household,
  • Total amount of your households income, and
  • U.S. Department of Agricultures Thrifty Food Plan.

The Thrifty Food Plan is a government estimate of how much it costs to provide a household with nutritious, low-cost meals.

The table below shows the maximum CalFresh benefits for households with zero income.

As your income increases, your CalFresh benefit amount goes down.

Household Size

Calculating Net Income With Allowable Deductions

Step 1

Subtract any Allowable Deductions

After you have determined which allowable deductions apply to your household, subtract those from your total gross monthly income. Doing this will give you the total net monthly income for your household.

If you need additional help doing this, use the example below:

Determine if shelter costs are more than half of adjusted income $700 total shelter $605 = $95 excess shelter cost
Subtract excess amount, but not more than the limit, from adjusted income $1,210 $95 = $1,115 net monthly income
Apply the net income test Since $1,115 is less than $2,146 allowed for 4-person household, this household has met the income test.

Step 2

Determine if your Net Monthly Income is Eligible

Now that you have your net monthly income, you can see if your income is eligible for California food stamp benefits. Use the chart and follow the steps below to determine your eligibility.

  • Start by finding your household size on the chart.
  • Once you have located your household size, look in the last column at the maximum net income for your household size.
  • If the allowable net income is higher than your total net income, you may be eligible for California food stamp benefits.
  • If the allowable net income is lower than your total net income, you may not be eligible for California food stamp benefits.
  • Household size

Getting Food Stamps To Poor Californians Is Surprisingly Difficult

These bills could make life a little easier for low

    In summary

Pressure is increasing on counties to sign up more people for food stamps in a state with one of the nations lowest participation rates. But greater enrollment may require more money or more state intervention.

In May 2017, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors set an ambitious goal: enroll 70,000 new families in food stamps in two years.

Home to the states highest poverty rate and a growing homeless crisis, the county was enrolling just 69% of residents who were eligible for CalFresh, the states name for the federal food stamps program. With full participation, the county would have been expected to gain $560 million in federal funding for its poor.

The social services department got to work, doubling down on outreach, simplifying the application process with new technology, and producing data-driven progress reports each month.

Two years later, enrollment had only budged slightly.

At the end of the day, we only got 3,000 new . And that was a lot of work we did, said Antonia Jiménez, director of the Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services.

California has long struggled to get food stamps to the hungry. The state enrolled just 72% of eligible residents in CalFresh in 2016, the fifth lowest rate in the nation, leaving behind about $1.8 billion in federal funding earmarked for the hungry.

    Understanding Calfresh Benefit Calculations

Monthly income is figured one of two ways: If there is an elderly or disabled person in the household, it is done one way. If there are no elderly or disabled people in the household, it is done a different way.

The special utility allowance , telephone utility allowance , gross and net income limits, and the maximum CalFresh allotments usually change every year. The USDA Food and Nutrition Services each fiscal year publishes updated charts listing new income eligibility standards, standard deduction, shelter deduction, and maximum allotments based on federal cost of living adjustments .

Before beginning the calculations of how much CalFresh benefits an individual household will receive, it is important to understand the ideas behind the benefit calculations. This will make it easier to understand why some expenses are taken into account and how changes in income and housing expenses will affect the amount of CalFresh benefits.

Overall, the CalFresh calculation looks at how much money the household has to spend on food. That figure is compared to the amount of money a household of that size should be paying for food. If the amount a household has to spend on food is less than it should be spending, the household gets CalFresh benefits to make up the difference. Of course, figuring out how much money a household has to spend on food and how much money it should spend on food is quite complicated.
