What is baby formula?
Commercial baby formula ingredients vary widely from brand to brand, but the composition of the formula is designed to replicate the nutritional content of a mothers breast milk one to three months postpartum. The Food and Drug Administration has regulated that all commercial baby formula products must contain 29 essential ingredients, but the base of the formula can vary. The most common types of baby formula include via Mayo Clinic:
- Cows Milk-Based These formulas are chiefly designed to make it easier for babies to digest formula and closely resemble breast milk. However, because some babies could be allergic to the proteins found in cows milk, other formula substitutes may be necessary.
- Soy Milk-Based Soy-based formulas are typically embraced by parents who wish to avoid animal-based foods and exclude them from their childs diet.
- Protein Hydrolyzed Formula These formulas are composed of proteins that have been partially broken down and fall into two categories: Partially Hydrolyzed and Extensively Hydrolyzed. Partially Hydrolyzed formulas have only a portion of the proteins broken down into short chains called peptides, while extensively hydrolyzed formulas have both peptides and free amino acids, the latter of which are classified as hypoallergenic.

The supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is geared towards mitigating hunger in the United States. Placed under the US Department of Agriculture, SNAP uses EBT cards to distribute government aid like food stamps and TANF to low-income families and other disadvantaged groups. The goal is to supplement the food budget of the needy so that they can afford the healthy, nutritious foods needed to live well and get ahead in life.
Theres also a special part of SNAP called WIC. WIC stands for Women Infants and Children. As the name goes, its aimed at providing nutritional and general healthcare benefits to expectant mothers, breastfeeding women, and children below the age of five. Over 53% of infants in the US qualify for WIC benefits.
Whatever government aid you get, an account is opened under your name where your SNAP funds are loaded every month. Youll then receive an EBT card to easily access and spend your SNAP benefits on eligible items from approved retailers.
If youre an expectant or a breastfeeding mother with children under five years, youll probably qualify for WIC benefits. The problem is, you cant use your EBT card to purchase anything you want. Thats because there are rules in place that limit what you can or cant buy with an EBT card. For example, you can only use SNAP funds to buy staple food items that you can carry and prepare at home or cold snack food that you can eat on the go without further cooking.

Does Rent Affect Food Stamps
Your rent as well as mortgage have a significant impact on determining the eligibility of your food stamps. According to Mass Legal Help, if you are not paying for rent or utilities and receiving them for free, your food stamps amount will be reduced. Yet if you pay for any amount, even if it is just a small amount, the food stamps will alter.

The eligibility requirements for SNAP assistance depends on the state guidelines, so they vary from place to place. However, these guidelines are usually determined by income for total households rather than for individuals. They are also adjusted based on the number of dependents that an applicant has, like children.
For example, Iowan SNAP requirements are:
- your household has to have a gross monthly income less than $150 and less than $100 in financial resources, like cash or money in a bank account, OR

- your household has a migrant or seasonal farmworker with assets of less than or equal to $100 or someone whose income is stopping or starting
You can usually visit your states federal benefits program to see if you qualify for SNAP and other forms of assistance. You do not necessarily need to be a US citizen in order to be eligible for the program, although this policy varies from state to state.

Cautions When Using An Ebt Card
When youre shopping, its natural to throw all your items such as food and other necessities into the basket together and then put them on the conveyor belt without thinking. However, your EBT card will not distinguish which items in your cart are food and which arent, and there are very steep penalties for buying unapproved items with your EBT money.
As youre shopping, make sure you separate food items from non-food items. Youll need to check out your food items first using your EBT card before finishing the transaction with your other items. Failing to do so could lose you your SNAP benefits for three months after the first offense, so be careful!
What Cant You Buy With Ebt
As with any other benefits, food stamps come with rules and regulations. Not every item is covered by your EBT, and its important not to try and use your EBT card to buy unapproved items.
This can lead to your card being declined, or youll have to pay for the item yourself later. In the worst-case scenario, repeated attempted to buy unapproved items can lead to your benefits being suspended.
Heres what you cant buy with EBT:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Personal items
- Pet food
- Household supplies
- Hygiene and grooming products
As you can see, some unapproved items are still essential grocery items. For example, cleaning supplies and hygiene/grooming products are necessary to any household. Unfortunately, youll need to use your own money to buy these items, and save your EBT balance for food groceries only.
