What Is An Abawd Required To Do
To maintain eligibility for SNAP benefits for more than three months in the 36-month period that started January 1, 2019, an ABAWD must complete and document participation in one of the following each month:
- Work for at least 80 hours per month
- Participate in a qualifying work/training program approved by the social services district for at least 80 hours per month
- Comply with a Work Experience Program assignment for the number of hours per month equal to the SNAP grant divided by the higher of the federal or State minimum wage.
- Participate in an employment and training program for veterans operated by the Department of Labor or the Department of Veteranââ¬â¢s Affairs for at least 80 hours per month.
- Participate in a program under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act or Trade Act which may include job search, job readiness, occupational skills training and education activities for at least 80 hours a month or
- Participate in a combination of work or qualifying work programs for at least 80 hours a month.
Note: New York State is currently operating under a federal waiver of the ABAWD time limit in all areas of the State for the period October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2022 so no ABAWD is subject to the time limit requirement during this period.

What Can You Purchase
You cant buy everything available in a grocery store with your EBT card. SNAP benefits are intended to help you buy staple foods and beverages. For example, you cant buy household items like paper towels, soap, razors, deodorant or pet supplies. You cant buy beer, wine or alcohol, vitamins, medicines or supplements.
Additionally, you cant use your SNAP benefits to pay for college cafeteria plans.

Do The Employment Requirements For Eligibility Apply To Everyone
The simple answer is no, the employment requirements do not apply to everyone. Each state is able to outline the employment requirements for SNAP recipients. However, they all follow the same basic guidelines. SNAP work requirements include:
- You must show you are actively looking for work when unemployed.
- If you are employed, you are not allowed to quit your job, and if you are recently unemployed, you may have to provide proof unemployment was not voluntary.
- You also can not intentionally reduce your hours. If your hours were reduced, and that is what made you eligible for SNAP benefits, you may have to provide proof that you did not voluntarily cut your hours.
- If you are offered a job while on SNAP, you have to take it. Turning down gainful employment can make you ineligible for ongoing benefits.
- States offer employment and training programs designed to help individuals receiving aid to find gainful employment and become self-sufficient. Depending on your situation and the state you live in, you may be required to participate in a state-offered program.
There are people exempt from the employment requirements. These people, if income eligible, can receive monthly SNAP benefits regardless of their work situation. The exemption applies to children, seniors, pregnant women, and anyone that is unable to work for health reasons.
This Is The Mathematical Equation They Use To Determine Your Food Stamps Award
The food stamps office uses a mathematical equation to determine exactly how much money you will receive in food stamps. The first step to getting more food stamps is learning how this math works!
Step One: Find your gross income.
The first step is to identify your gross income. Gross income is what you earn before any deductions or taxes are taken out.
Step Two: Calculate your net income
Your net income is what remains after expenses and deductions. In order to calculate your net income, the food stamps office will subtract your eligible expenses and any deductions that you claim. Well talk more about deductions in just a bit.
Step Three: Identify the familys expected contribution.
Since SNAP rules expect families to contribute 30% of their remaining net income toward food expenses, the agency will calculate 30% of the final income determined in Step Four. If you have no remaining net income, your contribution will be $0.
Step Four: Determine the monthly food stamps amount.
In order to determine how much money youll receive in food stamps, take the maximum allotment for your family size and deduct your familys expected contribution. If its $0, then youll receive the maximum allotment.

- A student enrolled in any recognized school, job skills training, or institution of higher education at least half-time and meeting the student eligibility criteria to receive SNAP
- An applicant for SNAP benefits and Supplemental Security Income jointly or in receipt of SSI
- Employed or self-employed and working at least 30 hours per week or receiving weekly earnings at least equal to the federal minimum wage times 30
