At the beginning of every federal fiscal year, the United States Department of Agricultures Food and Nutrition Service adjusts maximum Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, deductions and income eligibility standards. These adjustments are known as the SNAP Cost of Living Adjustment .

What You Need For Apply For Snap Benefits

New Standard Medical Deduction
Households with elderly participants or participants with a disability may receive one of the following deductions from their income:
- A Standard Medical Deduction of $160 minus a $35 disregard which equals $125 or,
- An actual monthly out-of-pocket medical expense deduction, minus a $35 disregard when expenses exceed the $160 SMD amount.
Participants are required to verify expenses over $35 to receive the SMD. All expenses must be verified when a participant chooses to claim actual out-of-pocket medical expenses above $160.

To Get Snap You Need To:
- Apply online, by paper application, by phone or or in person when our lobbies reopen. Currently, they are closed for safety due to COVID-19.

* Due to the pandemic, the federal government has allowed required in-person interviews to happen over the phone. DHS is also allowed to postpone interviews for SNAP applicants who are eligible on an expedited timeline and offers the flexibility to skip the interview entirely if DHS has all the information necessary to make an eligibility decision.
You may have another person act as an authorized representative by applying and being interviewed on your behalf by designating an authorized representative in writing.

What Is The Abawd Work Requirement
SNAP recipients aged 18-49 years old, who are Able-Bodied Adults without Dependents and who do not meet an exception to the ABAWD work requirement, must meet the work requirement by working, participating in a work program, or any combination of working or participating in a work program for 20 hours a week, averaged as 80 hours a month, or participating in and complying with a workfare program.

Being Approved For Food Stamp Benefits
When you are found eligible for SNAP benefits, you will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer card. Your benefits are automatically loaded onto the card each month. The card will work like a debit card with funds deducted from the account with each purchase. The card can only be used at stores that are approved to accept them.

- A SNAP household may consist of an individual or a group of individuals who purchase food and prepare meals together.

Definition Of A Household
When determining eligibility, you need to provide information on all members of the household. A household, for this situation, is defined as all individuals that live together and purchase and prepare meals together. Likewise, you may have people living with you that are not considered part of your household. For example, if you rent a room to someone that does not purchase or prepare food with you, they are not part of your household. Renewal Requirements Are Being Reinstated
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service waiver to extend certification periods is ending.
