Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can be used like cash to buy eligible food items from authorized retailers.Authorized retailers will display either the Quest logo or a picture of a Virginia EBT card.
A SNAP account is established for eligible households and automatic deposits are made into the account each month. Applying For Persons With Special Needs
Complete Nursing or Community Based Care Appendix F if you applied for health care coverage for someone who needs help with everyday things like bathing, dressing, walking or using the bathroom to live safely in the home. Also complete Appendix F if a doctor or nurse has told the person applying that they have a physical disability, chronic disease, mental or emotional illness, or addiction disorder.
Applying For The Medically Needy
Complete Medically Needy Spenddown Appendix E if you applied for health care coverage for someone who is medically needy, but has income greater than the Medicaid limit and wants to be evaluated for a spenddown based on income, resources, and medical expenses. Spenddown works like an insurance policy deductible. The amount of the deductible is called the spenddown liability. Once medical bills are equal to or greater than the spenddown liability, the application will be re-evaluated for Medicaid eligibility.

To sign up for food stamps in person, simply visit a local DSS office in your area. If you wish to save time at the office, you can bring a completed application. PORTSMOUTH, Va. On Thursday, the Virginia Department of Social Services that they will be releasing emergency allotments of benefits to eligible families later this month.
The emergency allotments raise existing SNAP households monthly benefit amount to the maximum allowable based on the size of each household as follows:
Emergency allotment benefits are available to current SNAP households only and do not apply to P-EBT recipients.
Social Services note that these benefits are only available through a public health emergency declaration that requires an extension on a month-to-month basis.

RICHMOND, Va. The largest permanent increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in the programs history takes effect Oct. 1. It coincides with expanded income eligibility in Virginia.
It means SNAP recipients will see more money uploaded on their cards even though a separate pandemic-era boost to benefits ended on Thursday. It comes as the state reports an alarming spike in food insecurity during the pandemic.
A recent update to the Thrifty Food Plan methodology by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is behind the increase. SNAP benefits are based on the Thrifty Food Plan to estimate the cost of groceries needed to provide a healthy diet for a family of four. It was the first update to the plan since 1975.
USDA projects an average increase of $36 per person per month because of this change, excluding additional funds that were part of pandemic relief.
No one in Virginia should ever go hungry. This long overdue change to the Thrifty Food Plan means that over 760,000 Virginians can better afford nutritious meals, said Virginia Department of Social Services Commissioner S. Duke Storen. Food insecurity has spiked to frightening levels during the pandemic, and every opportunity to provide meals and more financial resources to low-income families must be taken.

How To Appeal A Food Stamps Denial In Virginia

Housing Choice Voucher Program
The Housing Choice Voucher Program provides decent, affordable housing to very low- to low-income individuals and families, including people with disabilities and senior citizens. Vouchers are distributed through Virginia Housing Development Authority in partnership with local housing agency partners. VHDA contracts with the City of Winchester to administer this program. Vouchers allow qualifying prospective tenants to select from a wider range of housing options, as opposed to being limited to designated housing projects. The program pays the difference between the voucher payment standard and 30% of the participants monthly adjusted income towards rent and utilities.
To participate in the program, a family must apply to a local housing agent and be certified as eligible. They are allowed to seek housing from landlords who wish to participate. The family may select the housing in which they currently reside or move to another home. Any rental housing, including single family homes, apartments and mobile homes, qualifies as long as it is in decent, safe and sanitary condition, as defined by program Housing Quality Standards. Every month, the landlord receives two checks: one from the family and one from VHDA. Payments will be made for the term of the specified contract.
